SJ acquires Dubnyk (50% retained) and 2022 7th for a 2022 5th round pick
the rumor from Russo is Dubnyk and Donato for a high pick /prospect
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
It’s been rumoured for a few days, but Devan Dubnyk to SJ is picking up steam.

Wow. What on earth is SJ doing? Whatever it is, I like it.

Whoa. Dubnyk and Jones? I mean if Dubnyk can find his form, it is not a bad pick up, necessarily.

It's a high pock being surrendered by a team gbat absolutely cannot afford to spend draft picks. That makes it a bad pickup.

I play ball hockey with one of his close friends (went to the NHL awards the year Dubnyk was nominated for the Vezina even).

The player is not a bad pick up. The assets going for him though, are an overpayment

LeBrun says that Donato and Dubnyk are likely separate deals
Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
So while I do think like my friend @RussoHockey that the Sharks have interest in both Dubnyk and Donato, I believe they are separate conversations. Potential Dubnyk deal to SJ is the front burner. Could happen over next 2-3 days.
Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
This could take a few days if it ends up getting done. But he’s San Jose’s top goalie target. Idea is a Jones-Dubnyk tandem next season.

That's interesting. I would have thought that Donato was the sweetener for the movement of cap to the Sharks.

If there is a team in the NHL that needs a serious tear down, it’s the Sharks.
Assuming they get Dubnyk, that means they have two below average goalies making big bucks.
Perhaps Wilson wants to keep as many players as close as possible to his age?

SJ doubling down on Win Now mode. Looking at those contracts, though, not much else they can do. Nobody is going to take some of those contracts off their hands.

They were a lottery team last year, and going from one bad goalie to two bad goalies isn’t the answer.
And trading draft picks is never the answer for a likely lottery team.

San Jose is locked into their aging core, and they have no real options other than to hope some of those players bounce back and have a much stronger next season. Namely Couture up front and Karlsson/Burns on D.
If those three players have a resurgence, so will the Sharks IMO.
As for this trade, it's a similar trade to the Jake Allen trade. They are snagging another 1B starter because there will be a highly condensed schedule with a crap ton of back to backs next season.

The SJ Sharks current model looks much more aptly to be described as "Win Yesterday mode."

Not to derail, but are you playing Superleagues? With Giants?
If so, we just lost to you last week

I thought they might take a shot at Lundqvist.
SJ is so locked in they have two choices:
1. draft players now, hope they become good in a few years, and then trade them for futures when they can actually start a rebuild
2. Spend picks now on players who might help them now, but could also be traded in a few years when they are actually ready to rebuild
We’ll have to see what they give up, but the Dubnyk part seems futile
