What’s the big deal about Mercer? Would hope to get the same type of player five years younger in the draft.

Tanev/Markstrom for Mercer would be in the same league as Erat for Forsberg

The OP says the agent needs days to meet with the team and tell them one way or the other.

Center, under 24 years old, can score, good 200ft game. RHS. What's not to like? Literally ticks ever single box off the list of Flames wants/needs.

Hope is the right word especially with a later 1st.

When it takes this long for a player to make a decision, it tells you everything you need to know about their commitment level. The last thing we need to do is sign a guy like that to a long-term contract, because sooner or later that commitment level will droop again.
It's been nice, but time to trade the guy, and move on.

He's a good player, but definitely not the kind that is untouchable. He probably tops out at as a 2nd line on a good team.

Could be a last attempt at a negotiation. It’s been assumed since training camp that the flames have offered the $7.5 million AAV for 8 years. And that’s where it has sat. I think we’ve all assumed it was a “take it or leave it” deal and it was no longer about the dollar figure or the term… just about whether he wants to stay. I wonder if Hanifin comes back this week and says “Make it $8 million and I’ll sign.”

No, it really doesn't.
In my experience, the people who are quickest to make decisions are also most likely to change their minds and try to back out later. Those who take their own sweet time are planning for the commitment and want to make sure they get it right.
There are also people who delay making a decision just because it isn't important to them and they enjoy jerking the other party around. Such people rarely become top performers in any field, so I think we can rule both Hanifin and his agent out on that one.

Or... maybe his agent is in Cancun with his family, and gets back to town later this week.

True, but i's not like the Flames sprung this on him and gave him the weekend to decide. This goes back to atleast the summer, if not the previous season.
Let's also keep in mind that this guy asked for a trade because he supposedly wants to play in the US. No matter what the Flames do on the ice, the geography won't be changing. Even if you back up the truck for the guy, his heart may still be somewhere else.
At some point if you can't pick a side, a side is picked for you.

Getting pedantic in here with timing. Hanifin was asked to make his decision over the all star break. He made his decision and now it is in agents hands.

Not like there’s internet in Cancun. I don’t want Hanifin around on a max term deal. He’s too old and doesn’t even know if he wants to be in Calgary.

Greg Wyshnovski? (Sp) said this morning on 960 that Tanev was definitely worth a 1st rounder.

Yeah, my first thought reading this thread is that I gotta think if the Flames would let Tanev go for a 2nd, he'd probably be gone by now.

Yep, even wishing for a 2nd liner with a late first is being wildly optimistic.
