The combined annual salary of all the players on the Blue Jays active payroll is $40,207,971

$46,044,904 is how much they're paying Tulo, Martin and Morales to not play for them.

Sorry Inferno, no Gurriel I guess.

I kind of figured he still wouldn’t be able to go even if it didn’t put him on the IL. That looked like something that would take him out a few games at the least.

I haven't really had too much of an issue with Montoyo, but what he did with one of the Jays most valuable assets/trade chips this year is almost unforgivable.

Up until Jul 2nd Giles had pitched 30 innings, with 52 strike outs and 1.20 ERA. He was an utterly dominant closer with a season and a half of control left.

Then Montoyo put him in on July 3 for a 3rd straight game against the Red Sox, and since then he's been on and off the IL, pitched only 7 innings with a 5.14 ERA.

He totally blew up the guys arm right at a point when his trade value was about to be realized and I'd like to know why. What was so important about that game for Montoyo to feel he had to use Giles again? Thinking maybe the Jays were about to go on a run and get back into the playoff race? (green text not needed).

What an idiot. The reward was no where near worth the level of risk, and once again the Jays have a valuable trade chip get tossed into the trash can. I'll be shocked if Giles ever again has the value he had as of July 2nd.

Vlad just had the other day off, but he's getting another today. That's some #### luck.

Yes Montoyo has made some extremely curious moves. Putting Vlad 5th in the batting order made zero sense to me. His propensity to bunt, while he hasn't been doing that often lately, it is still something that has been shown for a long long time that it reduces your run probability in almost all situations.

The Giles thing was weird, also Montoyo getting Giles up in the Tampa game twice without pitching.

Sunday afternoon home game against the Yanks and they sit Vlad?

Going to be some unhappy fans there today, for good reason.

Thornton perfect one time thru the order.

5 K's

He is so tantalizing one minute, only to get his arse handed to him the next.

Yep. Figured they would have learned their lesson from the Victoria day debacle.

Likely one of their largest crowds of the season. With their dynamic ticket pricing people are likely paying above average costs for tickets. Fans would have every right to be pissed off. I would probably like to see a 20 year old recent HR derby record setter/AL player of the week/guy who just hit a ball 119 mph. I dunno.

Vlad just had a day off the other day too, makes me wonder if he didn't tweak something on his triple and subsequent slide.

OMFG WOW

What a way to have a perfect game get broken up. Only the 5th inning, but still.

That's just sad Teoscar.

I’m just glad he got to pinch hit. Though I was up on the concourse watching it to get a head start on the crowd. I figured when Drury came up he wasn’t going to so I left my seat.

It’s too bad they couldn’t score any runs but 1-0 is better than 10-0.

Reds claim Galvis off waivers.

Weird. I'm surprised they couldn't get some sort of lottery ticket for him a couple weeks ago.

I wonder if they bring up Tellez or Alford.

I really want to see Alford myself.

Why was Galvis on waivers exactly? What is the point of losing him for free?

Hard to say if you're not behind the scenes.

Him being gone makes a ton of sense, Bo has taken off running. It is weird that it didn't happen two weeks ago though.

I wonder if the same thing will happen with Smoak now too.

$$$

Probably didn't get any real offers on him at the trade deadline, they probably don't really see any space for him on the roster next season, and if they don't pick up their team option for next year it costs them $1M.

So might as well put him on waivers now, hope someone takes him, and it clears out their salary for the rest of this year, and potentially saves them $1M in the offseason.

That makes perfect sense. Not like he was going to play much anyways. I'd like to see Alford up before rosters expand... see how he does against MLB pitching these days (and if he can go more then 5 seconds without hurting himself).

Hidden Gems from the 2018 Draft

Quote:
Simeon Woods Richardson, RHP, Blue Jays
Baseball America: 8
MLB Pipeline: 7
Marc Hulet: 6

Part of me really didn’t like the Jays’ return for Marcus Stroman from the Mets. The other part of me was a huge Woods Richardson fan. The young hurler, who’s still just 18, has been nothing short of brilliant in pro ball to date. He was actually on his way to High-A ball when the Jays acquired him so that’s where he landed with his new club, too, after posting a strikeout rate of 11.15 K/9 in 78.1 Low-A ball innings. In his first two games in the Toronto system, he has 13 strikeouts in 8.2 innings but he’s also been a little (uncharacteristically) wild. Woods Richardson has a high ceiling, especially if he can harness a third pitch to go with his outstanding fastball-curveball combo. If the pitchers can stay healthy, the Jays could have a really exciting starting rotation in about three years with Nate Pearson (2018 first rounder), Alex Manoah (2019 first rounder), Woods Richardson (2018 2nd rounder)… and one other guy I’m going to talk about in a minute.

Adam Kloffenstein, RHP, Blue Jays
Baseball America: 13
MLB Pipeline: 11
Marc Hulet: 9

Kloffenstein lasted until the 88th selection of the 2018 draft because everyone — including the young pitcher – thought he was going to Texas Christian University. But the organization worked some magic and got him under contract. The Jays have been cautious with this arm because, like Woods Richardson, he’s still just 18. Kloffenstein opened the year in extended spring training but earned an assignment to the short-season A-ball league, which is normally filled with 21- and 22-year-old college picks. He has not looked out of place and even made the all-star team. He’s shown good control and the ability to strike out batters while also inducing a lot of ground-ball outs. Kloffenstein stands 6-5 but he’s still working on building up his velocity. He sits in the low 90s right now and can touch 95-96 mph. If he continues to develop on this path, he could reach the Majors with a four-pitch repertoire and at least three above-average offerings.

Freddy Galvis claimed on waivers by the Reds.

Should’ve traded him for something before the deadline.
