Level 24 now. Fun stuff. Sucks to see people ruining it by cheating, but hopefully those people are banned and I continue to play.
A bot running 63,000 xp an hour would get to level 28 in a day and level 40 in just under 2 weeks. Crazy.

I caught a Dragonite around Vernon BC yesterday. The day before I collected things like Magnetite, Geodudes, Growlithe, Mankey, Rhyhorn and Meowth at a pub in Kelowna.
I enjoy this game much more when I play it casual vs grinding.

Is there a correlation with rare pokemon spawns and population of an area?
Eau Claire hasn't had much, but I've been there when it's relatively quiet. People are saying it's better when there are more people at night? Thoughts?

Is it just me or do a lot more Pokemon escape the balls since the latest update?
I've got Weedles running loose on me for Christ's sake.

Yes. Absolutely. They are doing their defensive dance and arm waving much more. Had to use an 3 ultras and a couple razz to take down a gastly CP105. And I throw curves that are typically nice or great (rarely excellent though).

I live in eau claire and have noticed certain times of day to be way better (late evening). I have a natural GPS glitch that put me at the windmill from the comforts of my living room. Evenings are absolutely better for finding good stuff. I'm not sure if that time correlates with when the crowds are there, but I kept nabbing goodies even during rainstorms (when I assume the crowds have thinned).

Yup. And my throw distances and curves seem different from before the update. It's messing me up and emptying up my bag of pokeballs as I suddenly keep throwing the ball too far or not far enough.
The smooth look of the pokeball is weirding me out as well. I am not sure why they decided to change the look.

Got my best Pokemon yesterday, a 540 Electabuzz. Still not worth using for anything, but it is in my top 5 list of favourite Pokemon ever

sitting in a Tokyo hotel room doing some "work" done.
Start running pokemon and find out my room touches 3 pokestops, all currently with lures on them. Sitting here catching a pokemon every couple of minutes while "working". Zubats, Magikarp and Slowpokes mostly.

Kelowna seems like a mecca of rarer mons than here. I sat there over my vacation a couple of times and caught a magneton, persian, electrobuzz and a mountain of magnetites in short order. Even got a rapidash there in the park by Waters Street.

I think it's just a correlation of how many pokemon spawn in an area and how many people are playing in an area.
From a game resources point of view they'd have to do it that way, 99% of the land area of Canada isn't usually going to have players on it so no reason to spawn Pokemon there. And if the spawn rate was fixed then my neighbourhood would be a gold mine rather than a wasteland.
I tried testing it a few times, sometimes I'd check Pokevision and there wouldn't be anything within a 15 block radius. I'd boot up the game for a few minutes, and then there'd be 2 or 3 within that same radius. I only tried that 3 or 4 times so it's not proof, but scaling an area in response to the number of players just makes sense IMO.

I presume what we find rare and they find common occurs here as well. There's probably a ton of stuff here we find common and they find rare.

Reddits suggested replacement for the 3 step system.
Apparently over 50 million people used Pokevision when it was still active, that is more than half of the 80 million user base of pokemon go. It speaks to how badly the current game is on its own. Niantic needs to really fix tracking otherwise they will lose a large chunk of their user base eventually.
Pokevision creator points this out in his open letter to niantic.

Seeking opinions: Would it piss you off more to not get past a Pidgey or a Drowzee in a gym? Cleaned up the collection, found a 98% pidgey and a 96% Drowzee. Im at level 21 now and have never hit the upgrade button once so I have dust to spare. Would like to put together a troll-mon that causes people anxiety.

Seems they changed the Pokemon scanning rate as well, from every 5 to every 10 seconds.. which helps the loads on their servers I guess but hurts people playing from bikes or cars.

Scanning? Is there a Pokevision alternative now?
I went for an hour walk around my neighborhood yesterday and was completely disappointed. The best thing from it was my eggs hatching.

What is so bad about the current (free) game? What does tracking add? What am I missing?

Just the rate that the game itself scans for surrounding pokemon (presumably each scan hits the server).
