I'll get slammed for saying it but.....F it....

If #23 can come back and play 82 games I'd love to see him resurrect himself with a decent year. He deserves it as he's busted his busted ass his whole time here.....and it would be a great feelgood story.

I don't know much about Weegar, but I assume he doesn't like carbon-based life forms.

IF Huberdeau signs an extension, it becomes a close deal. But you also have to keep in mind that Huberdeau is 29 and statistically speaking has already peaked and can expect a decline in a couple of years.

IF the Flames flip them at the TDL, they can get some decent parts back. But you just know that if the Flames are anywhere near a playoff spot by that time, they will walk them to free agency. Recent history suggests that.

Also, I am not sold on Weegar. I think he is part of the list of players who overachieved in Florida (Duclair, Bennett, Marchment). I recall him being absolute dog #### in the playoffs and Florida fans wanted his head on a pike.

So yeah, a lot of this story still has to be determined, but it has the potential in 2 years to amount to just Shwindt and a lottery protected 2025 first rounder when all is said and done. Hard for me to get excited at this point.
What in the world could you have done better armchair GM?

Florida's official release just says the 1st is lottery protected.

What does "affiliation" to the Flames have to do with putting some critical thought into the deal instead of jumping the gun into instant gaga? There's more layers to think about than an instant reaction.

Well the only way the trade would make sense is if Barkov was coming back too.

Well... That replaces Gaudreau. Still need a C.

EDIT: You know come to think of it you could probably use Weegar as the centerpiece of a JT Miller trade if you wanted. Or just sign Kadri, whatever.

It's tough to not be a bit jaded when a drafted players chooses not to sign with your team. Also, Tkachuk acted in his own self interest to get a great long term deal in a destination of his choice.

But we have seen plenty of RFA disputes go bad and ultimately screw the team. Tkachuk, the agent, and the Flames all deserve praise from getting this done quickly with a W for all parties.

Yeah, but they lost one as well. Though not sure Gudbranson = Huberdeau.

They now have a 3OA and two 5 OAs. None of whom they drafted.

EDIT: Gudbranson was a Florida 3OA as well, LOL.

Huberdeau has more 1.0+ PPG seasons than Gaudreau, and typically on much much much ####tier teams.

Can you imagine the other offers out there (Like Carolina) that Florida had to keep adding to beat?

This is such a home run, we’d still be pretty happy even if Huberdeau wasn’t included.

"not a fan"

is not critical thought...this is a massive win for the Flames

they have FAR more assets today than they had yesterday

This is a deal you do if Tkachuk is begging to stay, to do it with a player everyone knows wants out. GMs must have been dumb enough to think he is actually just below McDavid/Matthews

You're underselling Weegar a lot here

He's a guy who's been in Norris conversations for the last 2 seasons, and has nearly perfect underlying numbers. He's clearly been hidden well in Florida

I love how big of a step Hanifin and Andersson took last season, but Weegar is arguably our best defenseman now and he's immediately our PP1 D

Would be interesting to see what Carolina and St. Louis were offering. If it ever comes out.

Good call but considering Scheifle was part of the leadership group that shut down on him as coach in the seasons since that incident, Maurice may revisit some of his comments back then.
