Default New conceptual plan to redevelop area around McMahon Stadium

https://calgaryherald.com/news/local...ew-field-house

Quote:
A city committee is getting a first look this morning at a draft design to redevelop the 100-acre site at Foothills Athletic Park and the McMahon Stadium lands.

The multi-phase, long-range development would include an indoor athletic field house, outdoor fields, renovations to the aging McMahon Stadium, a “four-season plaza”, hotel and mixed-use residential buildings.

The redesigned sports district, still in its preliminary stages, would cluster multiple facilities or assets owned or operated by the City, the University of Calgary and the McMahon Stadium Society.

In 2019, council dedicated $19 million in “start-up funding” from developer-funded levies to proceed with design and planning work associated with a new field house at Foothills Athletic Park. While the city’s project “roadmap” suggests construction on a field house could begin as early as 2022 and be completed by 2024, city administration has acknowledged that build-out of the area could take between 10 and 20 years.

Here are some of the conceptual drawings presented to the Foothills Athletic Park Redevelopment Advisory Committee.

Much needed...

I do find it interesting that we are basically seeing all the infrastructure projects that were identified in the Olympic bid start to move forward anyway...

- New Arena
- Updated BMO Center
- Update to Olympic Plaza
- Area around McMahon

But without the funding support from the other levels of government or revenue from the events.

They took away all the parking. Where will the cars play?

by the time this development is completed cars will be obsolete, right?

This subject was actually somewhat covered under a different thread a few weeks ago. That thread had links to the most recent detail study/planning.

I think the church in the NW corner on the intersection is being wiped out as well.

I wonder if that is primarily student housing or low income housing because seriously how many people are going to be interested in buying a condo right beside this development?

That is a lot of buildings and facilities and absolutely no parking unless some of those are parkades.

This is obviously necessary and the timeline and scope seem reasonable so... so far so good. Now for the price tag.

On the drawings, the buildings that are a light pink colour will be parkades. There will be a 500 spot parkade in that big building north east of McMahon (although, since it's earmarked as residential and hotel space, I don't know how much will be public parking). There will also be another parkade as part of the development north of 24th Ave on what is currently a surface parking lot at the University.

Also, on the long-term plan, the Stamps' practice field will have a multi-story parkade built below it, similar to the parkade with the soccer field on top of it at SAIT.

Cute of them to assume in the render that Crowchild interchanges would be built at this point.

Yeah, it was in the SSP Development Listing thread. Massive, 135 page PDF on it.

I guess the news is that this report that's been available to the public for a few weeks is now being formally presented to committee.

It's ambitious, but the phased approach makes a lot of sense, as it can progress as money is available. With a mix of residential, business, and university, it would seem like a good use of a CRL model like the East Village.

Here's the full presentation document showing all the phases of development being proposed: https://www.calgary.ca/content/dam/w...esentation.pdf

Other than the $200-250 million for the fieldhouse (which is a 10 year old number at this point), there are no cost or timeline estimates.

Thanks for finding that - I did a cursory search and came up empty handed before having to take care of other business.
I'm curious what the ACTUAL timeframe will be for all this work... at this rate Calgary should be able to try to slide some of it into the *next* Olympic games bid??!!

With the Calgary Vipers folding, the stadium is currently being used by the University of Calgary Dinos baseball team, as well the Calgary Junior Dinos, Calgary PBF Redbirds and Babe Ruth Calgary.

Sucks for Baseball in the city. Two fields and Absolute baseball gone. I guess all our kids will just be Okotoks Dawgs.

If you look at the document I linked to above, on pages 67-70, it shows the area allocated for tailgating.
