I think a guy like Pospisil should thank heaven that Sutter is running the bench. I bet Sutter would love that kid-it's because of Darryl that Jordan Nolan ever had an NHL career, and Pospisil is more skilled. I bet he sees time in the bigs as early as this upcoming season.

My hope is that spots are legitimately up for grab this season, and that Treliving doesn't spend on UFAs much, even on depth signings. Sure, sign a couple, but there are players in the system that are ready for the next step. This team probably won't compete for a cup this upcoming season.

Leave two spots open - make Zary, Pelletier, Phillips, Ruzicka, Gawdin, Pospisil and maybe whomever else earns it out of camp (doubtful, but once in a while you get a mid 1st - 3rd round pick at the draft, and that kid makes the team in the fall, like 2nd round pick ROR).

Phillips - 3 AHL seasons, 1 NHL game
Ruzicka - 2 AHL seasons, 3 NHL games
Gawdin - 3 AHL seasons, 7 NHL games
Pospisil - 2 AHL seasons (but only 40 games total, which is why I didn't originally include him), 0 NHL games
Philp - 2 AHL seasons, 0 NHL games (I am not very high on him personally, but it is still another body that might make it)

Both Zary and Pelletier have the potential to play in the NHL next season.

They won't all play. However, you won't know if they can unless you give them a shot. I think some youthful exuberance is just what this team needs, and I think each one of these players could end up being good 3rd round players and higher if they develop. Will be some growing pains, but I don't think it is asking for too much to pick two of the best, and put them on lines 3 and 4 with vets and see how they do.

I would much rather do that than sign guys like Simon and Nordstrom. I can understand Ritchie as he is a legitimate strong skater who is very physical and will not hesitate to protect this team - this team is very short on toughness now from top to bottom. I wouldn't want Pospisil to have to take that role on, for instance, so Ritchie is a good re-sign. I don't know about Pospisil - I like him as a prospect, but that's two years in a row of not playing much at the AHL level due to serious injuries. However, if he pushes and makes the team, then he makes it, period.

I didn't include other potential prospects like Pettersen (1st AHL season under his belt, but I like this kid), other prospects that were still playing in Junior/AHL, or players like Tuulola that didn't exactly impress so far. There can be a surprise.

On defence, you have Mackey (probably on the team), Kylington (maybe the 7th again, who knows??), and then more wild cards like Poolman and Yelesin. Defence as a whole needs an offensive upgrade though, and I can only assume that there will be changes made (other than Giordano).

Point is, I argue that there are enough experienced AHL prospects that probably deserve legitimate looks on the team, plus guys who could legitimately make it. I think this team would look better this year having a couple of these young guys on the team (playing on different lines).

^^ Keep in mind that Ritchie and Stone were PTOs and therefore, were not signed over the kids. They were signed because the kids couldn’t grab at least those two spots. The other problem was cap and the scrub signings were cheaper than the kids, by 1-200K bucks. So that’s $500K-1 million saved if you play some $700K players instead of your rookies.

This is great to hear... the kid's a real clutch performer.

We know that motivation and Compete Level won't hold him back.

This is exactly what the scouts and pundits were saying about him at the Draft when tbe Flames picked him.

I can't wait.

Pelletier's Val-d’Or Foreurs lose in the QMJHL Finals to Victoriaville Tigres.

With that, Jakob Pelletier's Juniors career likely comes to a close.

Pelletier one of 3 finalists for the QMJHL MVP

https://theqmjhl.ca/video/the-2020-2...lists-revealed

Quote:
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League announced today its finalists for the prestigious Michel-Brière Trophy, awarded annually to the regular season’s Most Valuable Player. Val-d’Or Foreurs captain Jakob Pelletier as well as Charlottetown Islanders teammates Cedric Desruisseaux and Colten Ellis are this year’s nominees.

The award is named in honour of Michel Brière, a QMJHL alumnus who died at the age of 21 after suffering major head trauma in a car accident. He played his major junior career with the Shawinigan Bruins, scoring 129 goals and adding 191 assists in 100 games. He then played one season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, posting 44 points in 76 games.

Past recipients of the Michel-Brière Trophy include many current NHL stars such as Sean Couturier, Sidney Crosby, Yanni Gourde and Anthony Mantha.

The Foreurs unveiled their intentions to compete for a title after acquiring Jakob Pelletier last June and naming him captain one week later. The natural-born leader responded by leading the team to a second-place finish in the overall standings thanks to a stellar 28-3-2-2 record. Despite suiting up in only 28 regular season games, Pelletier also led Val-d’Or with a team best 43 points, 30 assists, 15 power play points and a +25 differential. The Calgary Flames first-rounder missed time during the season to represent Canada at the 2021 World Juniors, a tournament in which he finished with a point-per-game average and a silver medal around his neck.

There's no doubt in my mind that Pelletier is going to come to camp next year and be a huge story. I bet the Flames will have a very difficult time keeping him off the roster.

I actually think Pelletier and Mangiapane would work well together. They would be annoying opponents.

I love both those players so much. It would be a skilled, hard working line.

Pelletier is a stud. He has some of the best Hockey habits I have seen in the Flames system. Hard starts and stops every time, finds opponents passing lanes, and takes the puck hard to the middle of the ice.

The Mangiapane comparison is a good one. By no means does he have game breaking skill, but he works hard every shift.

I really hope Pelletier translates to the NHL as the organization badly needs more skill and tenacity.

Hopefully Zary slots in between them at some point!

I am not an expert scout, but my sense is that Pelletier has buckets of tenacity, but his skill is not greater then a lot of his peers.

Pelletier and Zary are both diggers—with skill. The sort of players coaches like.

I recognize Pelletier, but names to go along with the photographs would have been really helpful.

Who are the other four?
