Yeah and nothing in this legislation does anything to quells the nightly gongshow on 17 Ave, at all. At this rate, all of those people will contract coronavirus before any legislation slows them down. That said, everywhere else is now notably safer so we're going in the right direction.

Actually, you will be exempt from wearing a mask if you're eating or drinking in a public premises that sells food and/or beverages.

Here are the proposed exemptions (subject to change when Council debates this next week)...

Remember, if you want your kids out of the house and back to school in September, your best bet is to wear a mask in public in August (and the rest of July).
4d is a pretty big loophole. I can see some shop owner handing out food to customers and claiming an exemption. Like, a Halloween size candy on your way in.

I'll wear my mask, but I don't get paid enough to enforce this rule in my store.

I was browsing through some articles — the expectation is not that store owners will “enforce” the bylaw themselves or deny service. But they are required to post a sign that states masks are required.

We don’t know for sure right now where the infections are coming from. I think it’s a reasonable theory that bars and restaurants are a significant contributor. But what this legislation still does is limit those people’s ability to she’d virus on trains, shopping malls, grocery stores and other places.

We have solid correlative evidence that masks are effective at reducing the spread. If this can take our 30% growth rate down to a 10% growth rate it takes our weeks until Florida from 13 weeks to 33 weeks.

So doing something with restaurants and bars will be an important step. So is this and we should be happy we have done something.

Also if Edmonton doesn’t implement a similar ban we could have a month long natural experiment.

Do you mean 4d? They should state that for eating and drinking premises that makes don’t need to be worn only while seated. So going to your seat and to the washroom requires masks.

If any business is dumb enough to expose themselves publicly as anti-maskers, they probably won't be in business for very long.

Mods can you create a poll with hidden votes

I’d phrase the question as

Do you support the mandatory mask bylaw in indoor public spaces as implemented by the City of Calgary.

Answers
Yes
No

I think important it’s private so those that are against it for whatever reason will be comfortable posting. In other elections CP has been relatively representative of Calgary so would be an interesting sample.

I'm pretty sure we have all observed that there is no limit to human stupidity.

It's better than nothing, but the bar/restaurant activity and the private gatherings, some with double digit contacts are going to continue to undermine the efforts of the rest of us.

I don't understand how gyms are exempt. Of all the places I've been since covid the gym's are the places that scare me the most. I had to go to a different gym as the one I frequent had way too many 20-30 year olds that were carrying on like things were normal. Several times guys would come up to me (zero social distancing of course) when I'm removing weight from equipment and ask if they could use it to which I would say yes and they would get on the machine before I even had a chance to clean it. It's nuts as they just don't care at all.

Just ordered some Flames masks from the Fan Attic. If I have to wear one I might as well look good while doing it!

This bylaw is so bizarre. What exactly is the thinking behind “we need to do this to stop the virus” and “we’ll wait a couple weeks”? It’s ludicrous.

And then there are a pile of exemptions, rendering this effectively meaningless?

To me this is a pretty poor effort.

Maybe I'm getting older, but I'm in that age bracket and it looked terrifying. I wouldn't even roll down my window.
Really?

Which kinda makes this pointless in my mind. I don't think we have actually have cases really breaking out at grocery stores have we? The issue is places where there's not masks being used by anyone at all. If those are going to be the exceptions, then this law doesn't really seem to be doing anything then.

You gonna do this, then no exceptions should be in place.
