Family-owned businesses (but not JUST them....) often choose methods of payment that are "tax-effective" for the group. Unlike with regular employees, most family members are not eligible for things like EI or coverage under a variety of provisions under the Employment Standards Act, WCB etc.

So the owner(s) often choose to pay in a manner that benefits the family most. This can vary from full salaries only, to a mix of salary and dividends for those over the age of majority (or 24 in certain cases) to full dividends.

It's simply more common in family orgs than others, but by no means exclusive to them.

Or, if they are less "personal" and more "generic"...put them on the forum and ask away. That way others may benefit as well?

In case anyone isn't aware of it, the provincial government has announced a grant of 15% of a normal month's revenue, up to $5000, for small and medium business to help pay for extra costs of reopening (cleaning supplies, barriers, wages, inventory etc.). To qualify you have to have had a minimum 50% decline in revenue in either April or May 2020 in comparison to April 2019, May 2019 or February 2020. You get to pick which period, and you have to have been required to curtail operations or close due to a public health order.

Applications in Calgary open tomorrow (July 2).

Seems like ineligibility exists for those receiving the CEBA and CEWS and rent relief.

Probably casts a small net. Good move though

No you're still eligible if you only got the government assistance (CEWS, CEBA). You're not eligible if you had other payments (such as insurance). It says
Quote:
Have not received any payments, grants or amounts from any other sources, including insurance, to replace or compensate for the loss of revenue/earned revenue other than amounts from these government assistance programs:

This is interesting, if we work from home until September, we should qualify for the work from home tax deduction.

That would be good news for many of us. I've noticed a noticeable increase in our utilities (electricity in particular) since we've been at home.
