Gave him the Sam Bennett contract. Probably fine value.

Guess they could afford him with their extra cap space now. Wasn't he gone when OEL and others were being discussed?

This totally came out of left field for me. I thought they were done with him?

He filed for arbitration and wasn't getting 4m+ so unless they trade him they were always going to be stuck with him. You can't walk away from an arbitration award.

He should be doing that going into a contract year.

What extra cap space? The Canucks are presently $1.5 m over with a full roster. That includes two extra forwards, but even by removing one and replacing him with a seventh defenseman I do not see how they will not need to use LTIR for the duration of the year.

He regularly shows up out of shape, the coach is done trying with him, he refuses to play the in-the-trenches style he needs to play to be effective and he regularly does incredibly tone deaf if not out right stupid things off the ice.
We thought we were done with him too.
The potential to be a 20 goal hard hitting winger is there. He prefers to skate around the perimeter and is afraid to lay hits because he doesn't want to fight.
This is coming from one of the people who like him, too.

Sven and/or erikson in the minors
Sutter is rumored to be bought out in the window that opens in 48 hours as well, each team gets an extra buyout window for players making over 4 million after their last arbitration case settles, usually its 3 days after for 2 days, this year its 2 days after for 1 day

I just did a quick "opening night roster" on Capfriendly with Baertschi and Eriksson in the AHL and wound up with about 9,000 in cap space. Not a lot of flexibility there.
EDIT: I should note I assumed Ferland was in the lineup, not on LTIR.

Did you also buy out B. Sutter?

Personally I think it's an overpay for what Virtanen brings but probably better for the Canucks than going to Arbitration and who knows he may take a step forward this year.

The Canucks trouble is that Virtanen’s counting stats were good, and that, I suspect, is what an arbitrator looks at.
Frankly, I think if you can put him on a good fitness program and then keep his role simple, he can be effective.

Most contracts are doing that.
Avoids the 20% + 10% escrow (and additional uncertainty) this year.

I think the contract is too high. Wasn't Virtanen a regular health scratch this season? I'm not sure if he was scratched during the playoffs.
