All it takes is a rough stretch by Gio and a very strong showing from Valimaki and then the rest is history. Could happen mid season.

It took me awhile to figure that out. I literally thought they traded gio for Gustafasson. I was flabbergasted that i had missed such a big trade!

I had forgotten that though. Good point

I sincerely hope Vali takes the 1PP QB spot from Gio. That or Andersson does.

I don't think Gio's cut out for it any more, and the unit suffers from a lack of creativity with him no longer using that dangerous wrister like he used to.

I could see them taking Gio off the powerplay after training camp, if someone else looks better. Gio could probably use reduced minutes.

I would argue Valimaki showed more raw instinct on this one play:

Than I've seen Hanifin show even once in his two seasons here. Gio is getting older too, and Andersson isn't competing with Valimaki for a spot IMO

He was huge in making PP2 effective.

Well, PP2 is significantly reduced minutes. On average it's 1/4 the PP time. I still imagine him taking significant PK minutes, with Tanev, Andersson and maybe Nesterov?

The expectations are getting a little crazy for Valimaki here. The chances of him being in the Calder race are low if only because, as someone pointed out, he probably doesn't get the opportunity on the PP that is required in order to put up the points necessary to get noticed.

However, on that note, I think it would be a great idea to give him that opportunity.

People are being quick to throw Giordano out to pasture, but I do think it would be a good idea to cut his ice-time back. If they run a top 4 (5 on 5) of:

Giordano - Tanev
Hanifin - Andersson

in whatever manner you like, they can shelter Valimaki on the 3rd pair, and give him PP time to develop offensively, without pressure. That reduces the ice-time for the top 4.

IMHO, all of these moves would be beneficial.

With no points in the past two games, Jusso Valimaki is now tied for 5th in league points, and tied for 1st amongst defencemen. The game today he had 5 shots for, 0 against while on the ice. He was a +1 with 2 PIM and 21:52 TOI.
His teammate, Arttu Ruotsalainen (Buffalo Sabres) was 2-2-4 and now leads the league in goals and points (9-3-12).

Many Oilers fan think Puljujärvi is suddenly a top 6 players, despite the fact that Valimaki, who is younger, is producing just as much while being a 2-way defenseman.

I believe Giordano is by far the best overall defenseman on the Flames and that last year was simply a down year for him (it happens). I see him getting back to his Norris season form next year which is why I don't see him being relegated to the bottom pairing. I also think Valimaki getting a full season under his belt in the NHL if he makes the team is a much better approach for his development into a very strong top pair defenseman than forcing him into a pairing immediately where he'd have to defend against the other team's top end forwards.

For me, as long as JV earns whatever pairing he gets, I am happy. If he earns top minutes, PP time, and/or PK time, he shouldn't be impeded.

Reminder: he was on pace for 16 points in his last NHL stint.

That's a documentary worthy comeback story if a year in the Liiga producing at a rate that is under what Valimaki is currently posting turned him into a top six NHLer.

I don't know how Staples et al have such a strong understanding of how these leagues translate into NHL success, but they should let me in on their groundbreaking analysis methods.

It’s hard to temper expectations when he is producing points like that in one of the toughest leagues in the world.

But he’s definitely having me expect more out of him once he throws on the Flames uni.
