I knew we were gonna lose this one. I knew it so well that I didn't even set my alarm for it. But God damnit, that bowling effort made me believe and I was all the more disappointed in the end.

Huge win for England. They just needed to play in front of a hostile crowd that felt like an away game.
I won’t put too much stock in this though. Their backs were against the wall while India didn’t really have anything to play for.

It's stupid the H2H is not the first tiebreaker.
For Pakistan to qualify to the semi-final
Pakistan to beat Bangladesh by 311 runs after posting 350
or
beat Bangladesh by 316 runs after scoring 400
or
beat Bangladesh by 321 runs after scoring 450
If Pakistan bowl first, they will be out of the semi-final race even before the frist ball is bowled at Lord's on Friday.

Cricket has always been about Net Run Rate.
Pakistan could be out of the tournament at toss against Bangaldesh.

I'd bet they'll have a "gentleman's agreement" to let Pakistan bat first regardless of the toss. If the shoe was on the other foot, I imagine the Pakistanis would extend the same courtesy.

Lol, I highly doubt there's any agreement by Bangladesh to help Pakistan in a world cup match , even though it's pretty much impossible for Pakistan to win. They are bitter rivals. Maybe not like India and Pakistan but the rivalry is there (think Flames vs Canucks kind)
Bangladesh would love nothing more but to add to Pakistan's misery.

Ha, I would love the Bangladesh captain to win the toss, choose to bat then get punched in the face and a line brawl breaks out.

Yeah the Bangladeshis aren’t giving Pakistan any favours.
It was tough luck for Pakistan with their game vs Sri Lanka abandoned while NZ had the same against India. With different weather they are through.
Should be fun semis.

Yup NZ by no means deserves a spot in the semis with the way the played (I mean batted, the bowling has been worthy) the last 3 games but the format is the format and here we are.
I think one positive for us going forward is that this tournament has really shown it's time for the old guard (Guptill, Munro, Southee, even Taylor) to step aside and allow some fresh blood into the side once it's all over.

Yeah there is no way Pakistan is qualifying. Hope to see an entertaining game though. I’ll be cheering for the Kiwis to prevail over the Big 3.

Surprising result today with Australia losing to South Africa to drop down to second. Pool stage now complete so semi finals will be:
India vs New Zealand
Australia vs England
NZ are massive underdogs to beat India but I'll still be up at 3:30AM to watch and yell at the tv. Hope the boys can have the game of their lives!

Stupid tiebreaker rules mean we were robbed of an India-Pakistan semifinal as well. If any sporting event were ever to set off a nuclear war it would be India-Pakistan cricket.

Say what you want about tie breakers and rain outs but Pakistan only has themselves to blame. Their loss to the West Indies was pathetic. All out for 105 with WI winning in the 14th over. It torpedoed their run rate and their margin for error.
I’m very excited about the semi matchups. We finally get the India NZ game after their previous match was washed out and Australia England is the pinnacle of world cricket.

You must have been just as nervous during the 2015 cup playoffs.
It’s not looking good. Steve Waugh with the sick burn comparing New Zealand’s run rate to the 1987 World Cup. I guess we can’t make any assumptions until India bats on the same surface but it’s starting to look like the Kiwis need a miracle.
The interview with Waugh discussing the 1999 cup has been interesting. South Africa’s two losses to Australia must be considered one of the great chokes in sports history.

What will happen if a semi-final is rained out? Is it rescheduled?
Edit: Never mind, here are the rules: https://photo.24liveblog.com/2297002...324_440403.jpg

That semi-final game should have been the WC final. No doubt one of the best games ever.

Arggggh the rain! Now I have to do this all over again tonight.
On the blackcaps innings: this was always the way we were going to play. It's become quite clear this tournament that the batsmen who were selected are either past their prime or just not skilled enough to score big runs against the top teams, apart from Kane Williamson. The game plan has therefore revolved around defensive play and just surviving and hoping that the bowlers (the true strength of the team) can get it done. It's a far cry from the 2015 team where aggressive batting was a strength.
I'm taking a few positives from this innings though:
-No ducks
-An opener actually stayed in for a whole and scored some runs (Nicholls)
-Williamson steady as ever
-Taylor is on 67* and is probably the best person to have at the crease for the final 5 overs
So, not a world beating innings, and probably not enough to make it tough for India, but our bowlers will go out fighting and they have been what our team lives and dies by.

Stupid English weather.
New Zealand has been playing a similar conservative batting style to Australia. They are just lacking the deep lineup that can pile on runs late. That said they still have a chance to post 250 which at least provides a small challenge for India.
