Default For Toronto Maple Leaf Haters

Disclaimer: I assume this is okay to post here in the main thread. If not,
feel free to move it, close it, or tell me where to re-post it.

============================================

A poster here (I assume a hardcore Maple Leafs hater) sent me a message
asking if I could find a game in the archives that represented the start of the
decline that has seen the Toronto team fail to win the cup for 54 years and
post it using the same format as for the Flames Stanley Cup Thread from
earlier this year. Since I have these reports for every NHL game from 1961
thru 1992, I looked back and found this game from January 24, 1968 and
chose it because it already had the reference in the game notes.
That "historical note" should pretty much cover what was asked for.

The background is that it was the year of the NHL's big expansion from 6 to 12 teams.
The Leafs were the defending Stanley Cup Champions from their win in April 1967.
The Leafs entered the night 2 points out of first place and with an expansion
team in their home building, expected an easy win to vault back to the top of
the division.
From there, it's all downhill. Like way downhill.

Also, this was one week after the mid-season all-star game that still pitted
the defending champs (Toronto) against the stars from the other 11 teams,
and also one week after the on-ice tragedy that took the life of Minnesota C-
Bill Masterton.

This report was originally written on the night of the game and updated at
the end of that season, then the "Historical Note" was added in 2001 when
this entire project was updated. For this post, I updated the one line in the
Other Notes section for this post to reflect the current reality.

They made millions playing for the Maple Leafs. The CRA alleges they participated in a ‘sham’ to skirt paying their fair share of taxes

Darcy Tucker and Shayne Corson deny the CRA’s allegations, which stem from their foreign currency trading during their years playing for the Leafs.

Yesterday marked 6000 days since the Leafs last won a playoff series (first round in 2004 against Ottawa).

I love photos from the old days of the NHL, like the one of Horton behind the net. There are some great photos from the HHOF that you can order online, and I have a few framed ones in my home office. They've made a great background for video calls during this endless WFH period.

The image quality on some of those old shots is amazing considering the technology.

5 D and 11 forwards is interesting. One of those things that you think were always like they are now.

Not only was it 5 and 11, but a good chunk of the time the 5th defenseman
wound up as a "DNP" (did not play) because coaches generally only used 4,
rotating the pairs back and forth throughout the game.

It was somewhat the same for the 10th and 11th forwards, although not
quite as common for them to get "DNP" because they were often the
dedicated penalty killers. However, I see dozens of examples from that
season alone where in a low specialty teams game, the coach only used 13 skaters.

And the cheap/budget teams (Oakland and Chicago) often only dressed 15
to begin with to save a few bucks on salaries.

Was not born until 1985 but thoroughly appreciated the read and hockey history in this thread. Great post!

FYI 18 skaters dressed didn't become the rule until 1982. It was 17 from 1971 to 1982, 16 from 1960 to '71. Teams didn't have to dress a backup goalie until 1965.

I hate the Leafs, but I also don't care about them enough to care about their history.
