Hedman isn't even close to the other two this year.
At first, I thought there was no way Carlsson wouldn't win it.
But Josi should win because he was so much better than everyone else on his team. A true MVP.

More an excuse to name a defensive award after the greatest guy to play, without renaming an existing trophy. One he would have won multiple times.
Also.... “cup”. Man, nothing about that is a good idea.

if you want to name a trophy after Orr (good idea), change the Norris to the Bobby Orr Trophy for the best all around defenseman.
Then, if you want to have an award for most points for a defenseman (not as good an idea), then name it something else.

Ok fine. Bobby Orr Trophy for best Dman (the D equivalent of the Selke) and the Doug Harvey Trophy for most points from a Dman (the D equivalent of the Art Ross). D get a rough go when it comes to trophies so I'd love to add another.
Also, just a reminder, Gio is the current trophy holder. How cool is that! Once again way to go Gio!

Josi is a beaut, he should win every year that Gio isn't nominated. That guy is a wonder to watch, kinda like a modern day Lidstrom.
Hedman is also fun to watch-long, fast, galloping strides on a guy who's 6'6".

Josi should win it, but he won't because points. Carlson is a good d-man but not a Norris d-man.

I guess we heard it here first that Carlson is not Norris worthy.
Interesting.

I just don't think he is the best defenseman of the season. Isn't that what the award is about?

Obviously he will be one if he wins it, but it should be an award that factors in defensive play as much as they like to emphasize offense.
Take last year for example, for once they finally awarded someone the Norris not just based on points. Burns is the better OFD, but Giordano was the better defender in his own zone and was only 9 points shy of Burns.
It should be the same for this award. Josi was only 10 points lower than Carlson, even from Carlson's hot start. 75 > 65 points favors Carlson but Josi's defensive play >> Carlson's defensive play puts Josi as my favorite to win. I can also argue that Josi probably was a big factor on why Nashville was still able to qualify to play any kind of playoff hockey.

Also you'd have to think that Josi would have made up those 10 points if he'd gotten to pass the puck to Ovechkin on the power play. Which doesn't suggest that Carlson is not a big reason for the Caps' power play successes, but if you give Josi that tool, it makes a difference.

I would submit that Nashville plays a more conservative, defensive game than the Caps, despite WSH being coached by Trotz. That kind of game eats into a teams collective offence, making Josi's numbers that much more impressive.

Josi is a great player but when was the last time a team's undisputed best defensive d man also put up over a ppg? Erik Karlsson was never Ottawa's best defensive d man...
|
Actually he isn't that great defensively. The past two years he has been around -4.3 in defensive Goals above replacement and even in total GAR he was at 7.6 where Hedman and Jose were but at 18, but they had 3.7 and 3.8 DGAR to back it up.
In my mind Josi is a clear winner here because despite being slightly behind Hedman in most possession categories he still had great metrics and put up 10 more points than Hedman.
I view Carlsons season like Burns' last year where he finished 2nd behind Gio even though he had 9 more points. Gio was just that much better defensively and still great offensively. (For reference Gio had a 3.6 DGAR vs. Burns' -3.3)

Josi deserved it. Had a whale of a season and is all-around fantastic.

This is the difference between the Flames writers and Oilers writers. They seem to take their voting serious and don't throw in the homer vote.

It's somewhat surprisingly that Josi is the first Nashville Predator to win the Norris
