Leylah advances in Madrid 7-5 6-3 over Potapova despite hitting eight double faults. Happy that she won, but it's concerning that her serving woes continue. It's tough to change your serve during the season, but giving away that many free points is going to cost you against tougher opposition.

Denis takes the opening set in a tie-break (7-3 was the tie-breaker score). Was broken serving for set 1 at 6-5, but played an excellent tie-breaker (one backhand volley at the net was incredible).

A nice break of serve just now and Shapo is serving at 3-1 in set 2.

Edit: Consolidation was not easy, but accomplished.

Shapo is into round 3 with a 7-6 6-3 win over Tomas Martin Etcheverry. Really good variety from Denis today and a straight sets win despite hitting 12 double faults (certainly more in set 1 than set 2). Keep it going Denis!!

Charlie has the compression sleeve on today, but is playing some very nice tennis versus Shevchenko.

Edit: Charlie loses only three games to Shevchenko winning 6-2 6-1. No KT tape seen under the sleeve which is a good sign.

I don't know if anyone else is watching this Navone - Rune match, but it's darn high quality tennis from both guys.

Edit: Navone breaks and is a service hold away from sending Rune out of Madrid.

Edit 2: Navone blinks serving for the match, tosses in two double faults, and Rune breaks. We need a tie-break in set 2.

Rune survives and Navone is going to have nightmares as he really should have won this match.

Leylah dropped the first set to Jabeur 7-5, but is up a break in set 2. Rafa and De Minaur starting shortly.

Edit: Leylah wins set 2 6-2. This is the 3rd meeting between Ons and Leylah and they have all gone three sets (Ons has won the previous two matches).

Edit: Not able to consolidate however.

Well, that's pretty disappointing as Leylah loses four straight games from 4-2 up in set 3. It's still all about the serve, until she gets it figured out and can turn it into something to fear, she's going to struggle against top players. Credit to Ons, she clutched up from a break down in set 3, but that break to love really turned this match around.

Felix takes out Mannarino 6-0 6-4 and played some very good tennis today.

The youngster Jakub Mensik just eliminated Grigor Dimitrov and will meet Felix in the next round. Just a reminder that Mensik beat Shapo at the Aussie Open earlier this year. Time for a little Canadian payback lol
