Laine for either Brodie or Hamonic solves nothing for Calgary cap-wise.

Just speculating of course. Could just as easily be he lost his passion for the sport and let the staff know he's not interested in continuing a playing career. I can respect that; even pro athletes know when it's time for a change.
The team's statement seemed to rule it out, FWIW.

Are you talking about the concussion/CTE issue? Where in particular? I don't see anything in the original link that rules it out.

I thought they said "not health or family".

I can appreciate that. However I am also inclined to think the league and the players would downplay concussion-related issues to some extent, as they have in the past. Keep things quiet about what's going on, don't raise a panic, and let the player decide what to do with his future.

Basically I don't think it's concussion-related after seeing that quote, but I still don't rule it out.

Finding meaning in very little here, but I wonder if the state of the Jets factors in here?

Has a ring, has money... but does he see this as a contender in his career? Laine's comments about quality linemates obviously suggests that Laine was not happy with the team, and I wonder how much of that plagued the team all year

Do they all agree the coaching staff can do better? Is this just Laine being a brat? In any case, there's a chance this was a locker room issue all year. Seeing more of it in the offseason could be his cause for pause. Maybe after everything with Kane, he's had enough of it unless this is a contender today.

Conditioning issues isn't necessarily the same thing as health issues.

He's "weighing" his options.

Does anyone know if he took part in fitness testing on Thursday before asking for his leave on Friday, or did he ask for the leave before fitness testing and the Jets just granted it on Friday?

There was a statement that said it wasn't health issues, but I wonder actually if it's both health and not health related? (ie: Healthy day to day, but not healthy enough for NHL level)

For instance, he's perfectly OK when not doing strenuous physical activity, but once he started getting up to NHL level, things started to kick in and it wasn't pleasant mentally? (ie: Pronger who was reasonably fine day to day, but couldn't get up to NHL level without serious effects?)

Yeah a guy like him who has battled weight issues, likely his whole adult life, and has had to bear down and grind through previous camps/seasons, can get to a point where they simply dont want to/cant do it anymore. Just to much of a challenge to overcome by this point.

So not a "health" issue per se, but certainly related to it and particularly mentally.

Best of luck to buff.

Came in here to disparage the posters who don't want to make a play for Laine- not that I think it's realistic that he's traded, but give your head a firm shake. Laine would be amazing.

Hamonic+Frolik (salary) + any prospect + 1st is where I would start.
