Wolf will never let us draft top 5.
Wolf is worthy of a top 5 draft pick.
Seventh round draft pick.... seventh.....
If he can play like this for 80% of history career he may be the most impact full player Calgary has ever had or drafted . Guedreau tkachuk and iggy was good but goalies are a rare find.
I mean you can see the vast difference in structure and defensive play between these two teams.
Huska wasn't the sexy pick for coach, but man, he has done a helluva job with a low talent roster. Yes, a good coach often has a good goaltender, but there's more than goaltending that's put this team into a legitimate playoff conversation. 5 on 5 they are a very strong (low event) team.
If they can just fix the special teams, especially the PK, they should be able to lock up a playoff spot. Getting Rooney off the PK would probably be job one.
Huska has done a great job but the Flames stuck the kids with way better vets.
Imagine Bedard with backs and Coleman vs coligny and bertuzzi. Or Bedard with zary.. we wouldn't need zary at center paired with Bedard. The hawks d is either super young or older guys that never lived to the hype like seth Jones who already is 30 ( which surprised me).
Point is I now see the Flames are closer to being a retool vs rebuild.
It’s freakin empty at the UC. Check Ticketmaster and entire rows of the 300s in particular are completely unsold, not even resale tickets but face value retail unsold. Fans on StubHub are selling 100 & 200 level seats for $30. I know it’s very cold and it’s a Monday night, but… kinda depressing.
Probably expected when you gut your team and are garbage for years and years
Also, I was at the game tonight and the Chicago broadcast crew was pumping up Wolf as a serious Calder Trophy candidate during the post game.
Love hearing his name being mentioned by eastern media.
The Chicago broadcast crew is one of my favourites for teams the Flames play on the road. I find them to be less homery than a lot of other broadcast crews. Of course every home town crew is going to be homers to a degree because that is their main audience, but they seem to usually be fair and make exciting calls even when it isn't their team dishing it. Similar to our crew in that regard actually.
Also, I hope Hall is OK. Did he come back during the game?

Unfortunately, the Flames aren't a big draw right now for a lot of home teams. Can't completely blame some of the fans for sitting out a meaningless Monday night game. Meaningless for them I mean.

All my life (born 1957), I have been treated to 1st rate Blackhawk PBP guys. Lloyd Pettit and Pat Foley gave me a pair of Foster Hewitt award winners for over 60 years of my life. Ball is also high caliber. The broadcasters know that Chicago fans can smell BS, and, in no sport, sugar coat the truth. The PBP guys can be honest, and the fans won't revolt, where we get upset, is when we are sold a bill of goods, that is sub par. For classic Foley telling the truth, google Foley rips Karpostsev on Youtube. It was brutal, but from the heart.

Ya the Flames are to blame.. no chance a team with Bedard iced is ####ting the bed.

Have to be honest im coming around to this thinking.
If zary comes back and kerins can be a contributor the team again looks different. Get sharkbait oo haha scoring again and this team isnt flashy but is subtly skilled and deep at forward. It would certainly mean holding onto Anderson and losing him or weegs for any amount of time could be disastrous.
However a committed team with a hot goaltender who knows i guess. Sure gonna miss that top ten pick though.

Oh shut up. They have the 2nd highest attendance in the NHL. We get it you can’t stomach a rebuild but 17K fans aren’t suddenly going to stop going to games.
Stop ruining every thread with your constant crying.

One of those speedy guys on the Hawks blew by everyone and Coronato chased him down with ease and lifted his stick and took the puck and went the other way on the d zone.
Not only is his shot lethal he is a high motor player who is buzzing all over the ice.

I will say...Coronato's got wheels!
This is 100% purely hypothetical because I know we're shedding guys to acquire assets but man...it just feels like if Conroy could surround these guys with some talent...?
We're in a wildcard spot.
Do you have any idea how insane that is? We were supposed to be competing for the DFL Cup, not a wild card spot.
I do think at some point Conroy's hand is going to be forced one way or another. Either add some talent or really be serious about lighting the match.
But...can you, in good conscience, light that match when you look at what this group is doing?

We have pieces but they need help from going from a team that will be Detroit or take a large step and contend for a cup yearly. It’s not simple and your window is short.
So how does he get those pieces ? Elite talent isn’t just available and when they are it will cost you the same players you want to build around.
Young players will replace the vets anyways, so you need to keep moving guys out creating spots and getting assets back.
You just can’t win in this league without a #1C. We tried it before with Sutter and bombed. That’s the situation he faces.

Its a crazy situation. We've got a decent, young team but they need some help. How do you get it? You either move valuable players/contracts or sell picks.
Are we there yet? I dont know.
On the one hand it feels irresponsible not to try and give these guys some help but on the other hand it feels way too soon.
And yeah, we've got some Boat-Anchor contracts, but we've got cap space coming out of our ass so who cares? If we were up against it it'd be a different story.
At the moment our biggest problem is replacing Kuzmenko.
No, not his production (which is almost nothing) but if they dont re-sign him I think we're under the Cap Floor.
Can we sign an emergency backup goaltender who has never played hockey for an outrageous amount of money just to be Cap compliant? Hold on...I'm looking for my pads...oh thats right. I dont own any.

No you stick to the plan. Getting this team help would be short sighted. A playoff series is much different than a Monday night regular season game. We won’t be #### stomping Chicago.
Treliving went out and got help after the last fluke playoff and we ended up picking Tkachuk the next season. And Hamonic a season later that probably sewered the team. He was given Gaudreau/Monny/Bennett/Gio/Brodie. A much better group than he left Conorybwith.
Cap floor isn’t an issue. We have 5 RFA to sign and at least 3 of them will get big deals and the other 2 should eat up another 7-8.

Its gotta be too early in the morning for this.
Either way...nothing I can do about it so...go Conny go!
