Wholesale Sports closing
In Western Canada anyways:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...gary-1.4290641
Sad to see a Canadian store closing up shop but in the same breath, not surprised. Each time I drove past it, their parking lot was near empty despite being in a busy area. Always thought their prices were reasonable but rarely saw more than a handful of people inside.
I usually went for the fishing and firearms departments. I know the guys at the firearms counter were just awful most of the time, wonder if that's what did them in.

Hadn't seen this news. But the parking lot was full early this morning. Busiest I've ever seen it. Makes sense now.

I imagine they sell quality hiking boots and supplies?

Just got back from the Deerfoot Meadows location. It's a joke. Most of the stock is 10% off MFRP. Even after the 10% off, the prices are a lot higher for the same items than on amazon.ca or Bass Pro Shop.
A few examples, I came to see good quality tents, sleeping bags and backpacks. Coleman 8-person Evanston tent $340 less 10% compared with $271 on Amazon Prime with free delivery. North Face sleeping bags are all more expensive, without exception. Osprey Atmos AG 65L backpack $339-10% compared to $252 on webtogs.
No wonder they are closing...
Having said that, there were a few 30% off stations at the store. I did buy a Tilley Airflo hat and a pair of really good Keen hiking boots.

That is unfortunate. I definitely liked their location. I wonder if some of the other big boxes will move closer to the middle of the city rather than being on the Northern edge.
Its always bad to lose choice of location and competition.

I work right by there, and need some boots.

Stopped by. Most things are 10%, some 20%, very few 30%. I wonder if they will keep increasing the discount over time?

Of course, firearms and ammunition are exempt from the sale. That's the only thing I ever went there for.

Was disappointed three or four times in a row (price, didn't have selection, etc....) and eventually just stopped going. Same can be said of Campers Village, tbh. The consumer has (in this space at least) options...
It's probably been 5 years since I set foot in either. What a shame.

That's how close-out sales always work. They are still trying to get as much money as they can, after all, and no sense listing everything at 75% off when much of it can be sold at much smaller discounts.

I really like Camper's Village. They probably don't have a huge selection but they always have what I need. They usually have great clearance deals or boots in the spring and fall.

I'm a bit confused...you were disappointed multiple times in the stores, haven't been in them in 5 years...but consider it a shame they are going under? Why?

Yup, there are usually some (limited) good deals to be had but usually for less desired products towards the end.
They rely on the media attention to bring people to the stores, 30% is basically just a regular sale.

I used to love going there, but I'm guilty of visiting Bass Pro ever since they opened instead. Just way better prices on everything :/. Too bad.

Maybe others knew this already, but I received an email stating that Bass Pro and Cabelas have now merged too.
So even less competition and choice. Great.

The actual purchase was quite a while ago. Maybe a year or more?

Yep, not sure how I missed it. I wonder if we will see them treat it like Best Buy/Future Shop for a few years and then phase one of them out.
