Default Will Cobalt become the new Blood Diamonds

Cobalt a primary ingredient in batteries used in cellphones and electric cars primarily comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo which supplies 60% of the world supplies.

These mines are hell holes using child laborers and on top of that poisoning the land around it.

I'm all for clean energy, but can how can we call it clean energy when we're going to massively up demand and kind of meh about the practices of getting things like rare earths out of the ground.

He's bringing EMPHASIS to the word, just like Springs1!

But seriously, that's an excellent comment.

He's not wrong though. Here is a better source that may more align with your political viewpoint.

Sounds like there are some hopeful motives at play here. Maybe the DRC's Cobalt wealth will turn them into a stable respectable country like oil has done for Saudi Arabia.

Its getting more play then just this one link. But I get it, blame the source.

So because you're so sensitive about your source material, and I really really apologize for offending you by putting up something from a source that you don't like

Hmm, this is news to me. The original article reads like a paid hit piece placed by the fossil fuel industry, but the problem looks legit and unhappy.

Time to invest in cobalt before the model 3 fully launches.

This isn't a slight on Captain Crunch because the issue (despite my joking) actually is valid and important. But any time you encounter a Daily Fail headline, the very first thing you should do is close the page, open Google and search for a legitimate media outlet covering the same story. They give Fox News a run for their money for terrible coverage of everything.

Funny how 2 days ago I got mocked for suggesting cobalt shortages were going to be a big issue for electric cars going forward. I hadn't realized child labour was part of it. I'll wait patiently for an apology from Tinordi. I'm sure it is coming any minute now.

Here is a proper source:

This was my point when I was criticizing the link. It has nothing to do with my political viewpoints and everything thing to do with sensationalized headlines from terrible sources.

Related to the topic: Watch Siege of Jadotville on Netflix.

It's about Irish UN batallion charged with keeping the peace among the multinational corporations mining cobalt in the area that each have their own paramilitaries.

It's a really good movie IMO. And the lead role actor is a dreamboat.

Saudi Arabia is not a stable, respectable country, in case that wasn't clear to the snufflers amongst us.

All rare earth elements and especially copper will have very similar stories following them.

This is a totally predictable and real consequence of the push to convert the grid to "renewables". The higher the generation mandate, the higher demand for smart grid and transmission increases, the higher the demand for battery storage goes, the higher the demand for EVs climbs, the more we electrify, automate and cognify... the more we will need of these materials. This should NEVER be a surprise to anyone as this all plays out. "replacing" fossil fuels with sources that are extremely diffuse, variable, and low density will require a humongous amount of STUFF to even come close.
