True stars with good agents bet on themselves, he could have easily got $60m+ over 5 years ala Matthews and be free at age 26.

"Bet on themselves." Signing a long-term deal is not some weird failure to "bet on oneself."

He did his deal before Matthews...of course he could have done that, but he doesn't seem like a particularly out of the box kinda guy. And you're totally ignoring risk.

8x12.5 = $100M
8x15M= $120M
--> $220M/16

5x12M = $60M
5x14M = $80M
6x16M = $96M
-->$236M/16

Of course you could fiddle with any of those numbers on both scenarios, but the risk vs. reward ratio doesn't make a ton of sense to squeeze out another ~10% in total value (which could be achieved by just demanding the max on max term deals anyways).

^ McDavid had a long term injury not too long before that, he doesn’t seem to be a risk taker and at the time it was the top salary in the NHL.

Also hosted, produced and starred in his own injury recovery show.

And recovered from 21 simultaneous illnesses.

It’s the water.
