The kid chose wisely. He's going to a team where he will likely be in the top six forwards, possibly shaking out on the top line. Getting playing time with McJesus will be worth a Brinks truck to his future.
If he chose Calgary he would likely be a top six forward as well, just playing with the likes of Gawdin in the the minors. As attractive as Calgary would be from a winning perspective, the depth makes it difficult to make that decision.
Nygard made the decision that will make him the most money in the shortest period of time. He'll also do so with no pressure to perform at both ends of the ice and no pressure to win. This is the perfect situation for a mercenary coming over to the NHL.

If this is a 1 year deal, it could be pretty funny to watch play out in the end
As much as the inbred up North don't believe it, no one is signing on to be a 19-20 Oiler to win the cup... so he's signing on to establish himself in the NHL. Where better than the place that will gift you top-6 minutes with McDavid as you enter the league?
If he plays well... does he stay in Edmonton?
If he plays poorly, his NHL career is likely over before it starts
You're either going to get noticed and offered a contract where you'd rather be, or Edmonton is going to overpay you to stay. It would be a fun storyline for the Oilers to add to their arsenal. "Choose the Oilers for your best chance on a real team someday!"

Exactly this. So it works out well for the Flames.
Because we wouldnt want someone that isnt willing to work for their ice.

So when is the press conference with K Lowe and Katz to announce Nygard's new 6 x 6 contract?

Hope he didn't promise them 12 goals.

Hes looking forward to being blamed for the Oilers not making the playoffs next season.
If you have a choice to sign with teams and you actually choose the Oilers then the predictable outcome is entirely on you.

^ You are signing with the perennial losers, and only in the NHL is signing with the perennial loser considered an "opportunity"

Well.....its an 'opportunity' in the strictest sense of the term. Its just not a good one.

^ Nope, and it rarely is. Only around the Oilers will people talk about how great of a route it is to sign with for such an opportunity
Rarely do you hear about a signing with the Browns... as good as that guy can be, history tells us he'll be on losing team

Don’t really blame him. The Oilers give him a better opportunity of more ice time. Who was he doing to bump? Gaudreau? Tkachuk? Bennett? Mangiapane? Dube? No on all 5.

Edmonton will find a way to screw up this player like they did with Justin Schultz.

Isn't he 26? Its not like he's some uber prospect, chances are he'll come over here on the small ice, get blasted through the boards and run for home after scoring 3 goals in 40 games.

Already been said, but yeah he chose wisely. He'll immediately slot into the NHL lineup and will have ample time on McDavid's wing. If he shows a modicum of consistency, he'll get a one-way NHL contract which is the dream.
I honestly love watching the hype train year in and year out. The pumping of Yammamoto's tires was great fun. This kid will be no different.

Anyone who would choose of their own accord to play for that tire fire doesn’t have the decision-making skills to contribute to a winning team. Perfect Oiler.
Looking forward to all the Staples hype articles, scoring title predictions based on pre-season games, and mountains of McIcetime he does nothing with. One more to add to the pile.

There's a lot of salty hot takes here, but guys like Maroon and Schultz say otherwise. Oliers have a recent history of hot mess of guys leaving to be more successful later on. Let the kid do it too. Will be more fun later to make fun of them.
