The embarrassing thing is giving this kid the benefit of the doubt after seeing the video of all his classmates surrounding him frothing at the mouth while mocking a native american. Very predictably the native american guy has now been spun into being the bad guy in this scenario.

I do find it strange that you are outraged over “internet keyboard warriors” piling on someone for doing ‘nothing wrong’ but you yourself are advocating someone be charged for stolen valour, when there’s no evidence he committed any such crime. If this situation has taught us anything, it’s that fact checking should come before calls for “justice.” Seems to be that this lesson isn’t limited to those jumping to attack the 16 year old.

Btw, that whole incredibly shallow and stupid tweet thread starts with "committing an offense". Let's remind ourselves the 1st short video at WORST shows a 16 year old smiley disrespectfully. Say that out loud. He smiled in a way that the left deemed "smug". That is the "offense". How stupid, how shallow, how incredibly dumb. The rest of the video puts it into context that, likely, this 16 year old was probably nervous and unsure what to do with an idiot pounding a drum loudly in his face.

You lied when you said he’d lied about his service. What should we make of you? The boys lied in their statement on the event (in fact, the video evidence supports nobodies recollection/statement). What should we make of them?

Much of Phillips statements have been true and shown by evidence, same with the boys, and many of the major things that are off can pretty well be explained as “how they saw it” on both sides.

Again, I don’t know what to make of your position. You say he lied about his service and want him charged, an accusation which is proven false, so you then shift to “well, he implied that and wanted us to think it” which is different from the throngs of people writing a twitter dissertation on the kid’s “smile”... how? You’re different than the outrage culture keyboard warriors... how?

Let’s try this. Instead of looking at a smile, or hearing words, and saying “it’s not what it looks like, as an internet professional I know it actually means (insert something much worse)” we take a step back and say “hey, maybe I don’t have to perpetuate the outrage culture, maybe I don’t have to engage in it.”

Time to look in the mirror. If you want to be critical of lying and making stuff up to demonise someone, the first step is to not do it yourself.

No, I didn't lie. A mistyped CNN interview was later corrected. He was quoted as saying he was a Vietnam vet, and it was later changed to "Vietnam era vet".

There's memes going around with him being listed as a Vietnam vet, including that ####ty satirical article. He heavily implied it and got what he wanted.
