Does Treliving win GM of the year?
Hard to argue against it considering what the team has done from last years off season to now.
“In 1993, Brian Burke, who was at the time working for the league, suggested the award.[2] However, it was not created until 2010. It was presented during the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals at the annual GM meeting, rather than during the Awards ceremony with the majority of the other NHL Awards.[1] The next year, it was announced that the award would be included in the full ceremony” from Wikipedia

I think Keith Gretzky should get some consideration.

I dunno man. Have you seen how many man games the Coyotes have lost to injury?
In all seriousness, I'm not sure how he doesn't. There's a direct and obvious correlation between his offseason moves and the team being the most improved in the league this season. The other top teams largely stayed the course in the offseason.

If you simply look at current points vs last season's total (i.e. most improved), there are 8 teams with more points than they had all of last season:
CAL +15
MON +14
NYI +11
BUF +9
ARI +8
TBL +7
CAR +4
VAN +1
Pretty rudimentary way to look at it, but there you go. Most surprising on that list for me is MON

No question simply due to the fact this team went from missing the playoffs by 11pts last year to being poised to finish 1st this year. The reason this team made the leap they did was due to the coaching change, blockbuster trade, and free agent signings Treliving made over the summer.

My vote goes to Botterill in Buffalo, second would be Bergevin.
Calgary was never a tire fire like either of those teams.

How in Hell does Yzerman not win it?
Tampa has to be one of the most dominant teams I think I've ever seen.

Agreed, but him not being with the organization anymore will probably make him ineligible.

I'm with Locke on this one. He's still with the team advising Brisebois and he built the team, period.
What are you gonna do, give the award to his assistant?

Yzerman hasn't bee a GM this season. He can't win the award.
That'd be like giving Dale Tallon the GM of the Year award in 2010.

And yet the Blackhawks went out of their way, got special dispensation and got him a Cup ring.
Not being there now shouldnt negate the fact that he built what is there. Isnt that the point of honoring a GM with this award?
I guarantee you that if Tampa were to the win the Cup that Yzerman would damned sure get a ring.

He'll likely get a ring if they win, but he isn't getting GM of the year (for work he did in past years)

Personally, I think Peters deserves more credit for the turnover than Treliving does. Obviously Treliving hired Peters, so Treliving should get some credit.
And the Lindholm/Hanafin trade/signings were great.
But I have troubles saying that Treliving is the best GM in the league, in large part due to the James Neal signing.
I don't think Neal is that bad, but overall, I think the contract is among the most terrible in the NHL.
There's also the fact that we still have many questions about goaltending.
I still think Treliving has been good. Prospect development really seems to have improved. Drafting is solid.
But I just have trouble saying that he deserves GM of the year.
Sweeney in particular has done an impressive job keeping Boston as a contender for so long. Cheveldayoff has done a great job in Winnipeg. Most of their talent is homegrown.

Yeah, I think the Neal signing is a big strike, and costs him the award.
