Poor guy. Do any players wear ear guards?

Those ear guards are flimsy and wouldn't help against an NHL level shot.
Those old school Jofa's would, but of course you'd look like a dork on the ice and no one wants that.

Malkin does as well. I don't understand why everyone takes them out. They don't impact anything. I suppose you could make the argument it weighs more? Can't hear your teammates? I have no idea.

I used to take mine out, was more comfortable without them.
(Plus, may be wrong, I think you had to take them out to put on a visor? The length of the screws wouldn't allow both? at least fiddle with them)
I haven't worn a visor for a long time so just leave them in these days.

not looking like a dork is more important than safety - that is the hockey mind set. Surely helmet manufacturers can design something that is aesthetic and safer

Just like with visors, NHL just needs to make them mandatory.

Look at how long they wouldn't use visors. These aren't exactly the smartest people.

I had a helmet when the plastic piece over the ear wasn’t screwed in properly. It was just wedged between the foam and the shell and slipped out. I pulled it off and it sat in my bag.
Then a couple of ice times later, I’m playing D, some guy gets a stick on a shot, and it comes up and hits my ear. I was bleeding pretty well, left the ice. Figured I’d hit the shower then head to a walk in for a quick repair. It wasn’t huge, only got a stitch or two.
When that shower water first hit it, wow. Not sure why, I’m no expert on ear anatomy, but it was a huge shock, felt like I got walloped in the side of the head.
That ear guard is back in place and if I had a helmet where it was off for any reason, I would use something, even sock tape in a pinch, to make sure it’s there.
And I was super lucky, just a glancing deflection and a minor flesh wound.
I really feel sorry for Bryan Little, can’t imagine what that must be like

And visors don't go far enough. Need full face shields/masks.
One day someone's gonna get a puck into the face with a devastating result.

Hockey players are so ignorant with gear until something happens
I knew a guy who wouldn’t wear a face shield until he lost an eye
Another who wouldnt wear ankle guards until he shattered an ankle
I was a goalie and took my neck protector off my helmet due to the noise it would make and also cut and modified equipment making it unsafe
It’s an old school mentality that I hope eventually will die out
Wish him the best and hope he joins their staff instead of trying to play again
Not worth it

It's just not worth it for a few more years of playing. His current contract pays him about $5.3 million per year until 2024 at which point he would be 36, so at least he managed set himself up well to pursue other things and focus on being healthy.

What stuns me is beer-league guys who do the same thing.
No cage? Why?
"Thats how the Pros do it!"
Yes...but unlike the pros you have to go to work tomorrow.

I'll only start wearing seatbelts after my shattered body completes its journey through a windshield and into the entrance of a strip mall nail salon.

Like a dork? No way! I think the Flames should go to full-time retro jersey's and rock these as well.

That is definitely tough to read. Wish him the best recovery, and retirement, if that is the path that he has to take/decides to take. Concussions are no joke.
