Those patches over the years are a great little timeline of trends in graphic design. Definitely some lowlight periods out there. What strikes me is how dated the 30 year patches look already.
That's not true, the far edge of the 4 extends further than the far edge of the zero. The 40 is "centred" along the inside edge of the 4 (not the space between the 4 and 0), so it's not "technically" centre, but it seems like a fine balance.
Centre it directly between the two letters and the 4 sticks out even more. Centre it based on the overall combined width of the 40, and it'll look too far to the right.
I think it looks good. It looks balanced, which is more important than centred.
Yeah the only reason it is done like this is to align with that inside angle of the number 4 and to avoid the looking offset. It's actually quite clever as opposed to a purely center alignment.
I'm always for a design that is a little off of the norm provided it makes sense and this certainly does the trick.
This is light-years ahead of some of the anniversary patches out there, especially the abomination that was the Ken King lead 30 year patch.

That "stoic penguin" logo on the right is one of my favorite in NHL history. It's really too bad the organization has shunned that era for the goofier "constipated penguin with stick and gloves" logo when going retro.

I think celebrating the teams cup history is great - it makes sense when celebrating your history.
It's a joke with Edmonton because they can't stitch a towel without an 80s cup on it. Unique to them, they're stuck in that history instead of fondly remembering it.
The first thing that came to my mind when I looked at it was Alex Tanguay.
He was one of my favourite players with the Avalanche. Two quick things I never noticed from looking at his wikipedia:
- his career high for pts came in his first season with the Flames (81 in 81gp, though he had higher PPG in his previous two seasons with the Avs)
- he finished his career with the Arizona Coyotes. He was traded near the deadline with a few other guys for Mikkel Bodker. They had nearly identical statlines for the rest of that year: 18-4-9-13 AT vs. 18-4-8-12MB

I uploaded this on Twitter. Now I wanna know your thoughts, CP Nation.
I think it would be cool to go to this design around Christmas.
Give the 40th logo some primacy through the first third of the season to recognize the moment, then move back to “normalcy” after 15ish home games, so maybe after that mid-December game against the Leafs.
Edit: design-wise, I might have the redline go under the 40th patch.
