Old school gamer looking to re up with Strategy style RPG's
So I haven't owned a new console since PS2's were obselete, and even then it has seen limited use.
I've been a MMO whore for a while and even that has burnt out for me over the last few years. I want to make the switch back to RPG's.
The last RPG I played from start to finish would probably be.. Ogre Battle 64?
I met Ultima Online in 97 and we were in love for about 7 years, then I met a couple of her sisters and we made love for a few years as well.. DAOC, WOW etc..
Up until that point I was a RPG guru.. my favourite all time tittles, in no particular order, include:
Shining Force (1&2), Lufia (one only, didn't like two), FF2 and 3, Ogre Battle, Ogre Battle 64, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, Dragon Warrior (keeping it old school), Chrono Trigger.. etc..
My question to you guys is.. what games have I missed in this time period? I don't suppose there is rumblings of a new Shining Force or Ogre Battle?
Which platform would you recommend for the guy who loves the old school RPG? I tried Dragon Age Origins and I couldn't even get through one play through.. Mass Effect.. these new style games just don't do it for me.

For PS2, you'll probably like Xenosaga 1, 2, and 3. But be fairly warned: bring popcorn. Some cinematics sequences are ridiculously long. Early in Xenosaga 1, I timed one of the cinematics sequence at 45 minutes.

There are tons of tactics styled RPGs for the PS2/PS3. I would definitely go down that route. Disgaea 1/2/3 and Valkyria Chronicles are the most popular that I can think of.

You want one of the portable gaming devices(PSP or DS). The PSP especially has a lot of the tactics type srpgs...seems like there's a new one each month. Also, tactics ogre remake coming:

Took me a long time to get into Mass Effect too, but I finally kept forcing myself into it and it was quite good.
Dragon age...I loved Baldur's, but I liked doing things solo...Found a few mods for Dragon's age, and it made it better, but I put it down and haven't finished it yet either.
Check out Oblivion. My favorite rpg to date for pc. It isn't traditional in that it forces you down a path, instead it is a huge wide open world where you do what you want. A recommendation for it though - play for a bit, get used to it, and figure out what you think is lacking in it. Then go online and look over the thousands of mods that have been made for it, and particularly look at the really popular ones...These mods enhance the game so much, and you will pick much better after playing vanilla just a bit so you get a feel for the game.

I really enjoyed some of the ones mentioned above but I didn't see Neverwinter Nights in there. Basically, if it has Bioware written somewhere on it - buy it.

That tactics ogre re make gave me a woodie, especially with the original Ogre Battle music in there...
TO still goes down as one of the best games of all time. Ever.

Get Tales of Symphonia. Vesperia is a really bad clone. I own both games and replay Symphonia on a regular basis, Vesperia I played once for twenty minutes and never touched again.

check out Good Old Games, at GOG.com. lots of different older games you'll probably like. Neverwinter nights, and Baldur's Gate are now available there for like $10 per game.

Fire Emblem, barring the ones on the DS or the Wii, are pretty good. The newer ones (Since they've started being released in english) have become easier and easier though.
Shining Force (1&2), Lufia (one only, didn't like two), FF2 and 3, Ogre Battle, Ogre Battle 64, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, Dragon Warrior (keeping it old school), Chrono Trigger.. etc..
Give Lufia 2 another shot. It's probably the best late-gen SNES game and still maintains a cult following to this day because it's THAT good.
Sadly, they did a new Lufia game for NDS which was released 2 weeks ago... rather than making it an RPG they made it a tacky Action RPG... it's kind of terrible. What a shame.
Also... If you want a decent RPG for NDS grab Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light.
