First Millions leaves, now Hamilton. The Flames post-game show now has two major holes to fill. Thoughts and prayers to Sportsnet.

First, I thought there must be more returning, but I think the trade tells you a lot about Hamilton. Obviously the Flames don't like something about Hamilton, maybe attitude or defensive liability. They wouldn't trade a a big 25 yr old RH big defenseman that led the league in goals if they didn't have some big issues with him on or off the ice.

Obviously they felt the chances of Fox not signing with Calgary was too high so he was on the trade block. Once he was available it pretty much tells the other teams that the Flames are worried he wouldn't re-sign so that hurts the value.

I would have liked for Ferland to stay, because the Flames need the depth on forwards, but with one year left before UFA his value wouldn't be the greatest.

With Hanifin and Lindholm they have a chance to sign these guys to 6+ year deals. They both should be big parts of the team going forward.

People are saying it because there’s a good chance Hanifin evolves into as good or better a player than Hamilton.
There's a chance but I don't know if I would say "good" chance. Hanafin is behind Hamilton's progression as a pro so yes it's possible he evolves into as good or better a player but I would say the Flames should consider themselves lucky if that's the case. Hamilton is very underrated here.

Slowly coming around to this deal despite my initial reaction of disliking it. Probably means it’s a fairly even trade. If it’s true Fox wasn’t going to sign then I understand why he was added. Hamilton at this point is the best player involved, but that could change in the near future as Hanifin matures. Lindholm is most definitely an upgrade over Ferland who’s production was clearly linked to his line mates. I think Tre made a well calculated gamble, I am starting to feel it will pay off.

Oh hey, guess we better trade those Stanley Cups back because some prospect who may have never played for us anyways didn't turn out to be a bust. Said no team ever.

I do think Peters liked Lindholm, but the fact is that he underperformed every year of his career and Peters was the one constant. It'd be like if Gulutzan tried to reacquire Sam Bennett.

Hamilton is pretty overrated. He's not elite. He never gets in team canada or even the TNA team if 2016.

He will be quickly forgotten in Carolina.

I dont believe that to be true at all.

the Canes relied heavily on their top 4 and he was one of those 4. His ability to carry the puck is elite among NHL Dmen.

Also, he is only 21 years old and has been getting better each season away from the puck, something that cannot be overlooked.

Why does this team always trade for underachieving losers from cheap teams.

Wow, Brad - you lost me there.

Ferland, Hamilton AND Fox..?! For a middle six winger and a decent defender who could - wait for it - become Hamilton.

Unless Hanifin becomes the next Pronger Tre got robbed. Even if he becomes as good as Hamilton Fox + Ferland > Lindholm.

Wow. Just wow. I kept looking for "and a 2019 first round pick".

More like a playmaking / two-way center winger. Something like Backlund except Backs is better imo.
If Lindholm isn't going to be a big goal scorer I hope that the Flames are still shopping for a #1 guy to play with Johnny and Monahan. Monahan can't be the go-to goal scorer on the #1 line especially when it comes to power plays. Monahan needs some wingers than can put up more than 20 goals a piece.

Makes you wonder what the problem was with Hamilton.

People need to calm down. If Hanifin continues to develop at the pace he is he will be a much better two way D man than Hamilton who is good offensively but can be a nightmare in his own end. So that leaves Fox and Ferland for Lindholm. Fox is magic beans and there are many experts who feel his skating is not NHL calibre nor ever will be. I think he is a future PP specialist. Ferland is inconsistent as hell and lets be honest here, he is a 3rd liner that Gaudreau and Mony made look better. Lindholm on the other hand at worst is a 40 point skilled forward but with his talent level is more likely to be a 60-70 point winger. I actually like this deal, I think we won this trade and I am not a big BT fan.

Shocked at the negativity of this deal. As a general rule of thumb though - whatever the collective thinking is of CP - the opposite is usually correct.
Looking forward to revisiting this trash in a couple years

I know some fans here liked to pour water on the Fox not signing in Calgary talk but it sounds like that was the case. Just another reason this market has to be cautious when drafting US college players.

as alluded to by others.. if every other team knows he won't sign with you.. there is no leverage .. we wait 2 years and probably get nothing or a 3rd back....
