Up to 740,000 potential cancer cases that should have been urgently referred by GPs have been “missed” since the first lockdown, according to a damning report.

Watchdogs also warned that NHS waiting lists could keep growing until 2025 and even reach double the current six million.

Charities said the report by the National Audit Office (NAO) reflected a “devastating” situation for many patients, with medics warning of “the biggest cancer catastrophe ever to hit the NHS”.

MPs said the situation was likely to get worse before it gets better, with millions of patients who should have been referred for care during the pandemic now missing from waiting lists.

Many people who have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 will probably make antibodies against the virus for most of their lives. So suggest researchers who have identified long-lived antibody-producing cells in the bone marrow of people who have recovered from COVID-191.

The study provides evidence that immunity triggered by SARS-CoV-2 infection will be extraordinarily long-lasting. Adding to the good news, “the implications are that vaccines will have the same durable effect”, says Menno van Zelm, an immunologist at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

We are in better shape than Israel with our extended spacing. We should be starting 6 month boosters though.

South Africa has top notch lab services from what I understand, but I can see why 61 people on two flights testing positive would cause some initial concern. The first thought would be that this new variant is obviously very contagious or the testing leaving South Africa is subpar. Now maybe neither ends up being true, but I can understand why that would cause concern, until we had more information.

We all know this is everywhere now and likely didn't even start in South Africa. From the beginning of this I always assume when covid or a new variant is detected that means it's already in many places.
In regards to those flights...the focus has been on Omicron (still a valid concern where there are unknowns), when really the focus should be how 61 passengers boarded on two flights and tested positive on arrival. That's a clear gap in safety protocol.

Without the Omicron scare, those 61 passengers would not have been tested at all on arrival and let free to spread wherever they go. Also out of those 61 passengers, 78% had Delta or another variant not Omicron that are just as lethal if not more lethal (if the mild symptoms hold true) and extremely contagious as well. That really should be the outrage, but the headlines insinuated that most if not all of these were Omicron and the sensationalism ran amuck.

And considering that South Africa is the most advanced south African country with best testing, how many flights from other African countries have been carrying covid positive passengers all over the world, omicron or non-omicron that are not being tested on arrival or put in quarantine? What about flights from European countries? The person with Omicron caught in Calgary flew to the Netherlands from Nigeria without being caught as carrying Omicron. European countries are failing.

Flights were being passed as safe and clear of spread, when in reality some of these flights have over 10% positivity on landing.

People have lost the plot with this new variant and focusing on the wrong problem. The previous variants should have shown what to do in the future and to be proactive versus reactive, instead we have a brand new variant everywhere again.

Canada actually has finally gotten it right on starting mandatory testing at arrival for all international passengers (well mostly as US is exempted as if it is immune) and quarantine until you get results. I don't think it's going to prevent Omicron from community spread at some point, and likely already spreading. But it may prevent the Pi variant from spreading which may make Omicron look like Bumblebee
