Yeah, I think it's better than the Jones contract.
Werenski has a year left, so this takes him through 25 to 31.
Right through the prime.
And I think Werenski is flat out a better defenseman than Jones as well.

The Anderson for Domi trade is already a disaster
Laine isn't going to last more than this season in Columbus
This is an ridiculous contract, especially compared to the recent comparables
Jarmo isn't looking like some super GM these days. The Jones trade was nice but it's looking like one step forward, two steps back every offseason in Columbus

Did Jarmo just hand Werenski's agent a blank sheet of paper and say "write down whatever number it will take to keep Zach in Columbus but keep it below 10 million AAV"?

Why would this be a comparable for Hughes? RFA vs UFA. Two very different things.
And Columbus really had to overpay here.

Not exactly sure but I dont think the canucks were in a rush up to this point
No offer sheet possibility, and just from a negotiating perspective, more leverage for the team than the player with less cap space once the rest of the lineup is close to filled out
The athletic had an article about his and petersons deals where they asked 5 agents what they would expect and for hughes they had between 5.1 and 6.5

It's an overpay but the Jackest are demonstrating that they are willing to keep pay their guys. They have to go the extra mile to make the organization more desirable to players. He's better than Jones and his prime years are covered by the deal so the value will be good on the back end of the deal.

Gotta keep somebody. Werenski is young and good. I'd rather have this deal than the Jones one in Chicago.

Unbelievably bad negotiating by Jarmo here. I just don't understand how you can look at Brayden Point and Cale Makar and go, "yeah, our guy should get a better contract than those dudes, he's definitely worth it." He's clearly not.

Holland wants to give Nurse $10 million because he's the "best defenseman in the league" but they don't have the cap space. What a conundrum.

I'm guessing those numbers were suggested before any of these contracts were signed.
Makar: $9.5
Heiskanen: $8.45
Zones: $9.5
Werenski: $9.583
Hughes is an idiot if he takes $6M. Ain't happening.

No, but short term deals don't go for way less cap hit any more.
Why would he take 3 years at $6M when these guys are getting $9.5M? He would need $11.5M for the next 5 years just to break even.
