Such bad news for the area, but that couple looks like they've earned a break. With Vina's having closed last year there's a real void of "old school" pizza in Hillhurst/West Hillhurst that you'd feed a family with. Pretty sure Pulcinella would hang up if I asked for a Hawaiian pizza for my kids. Going to have to drive to Gus's by FMC I guess.
A "local burger" joint? Flippin Burgers? Burger 320?

Just came to post, and yeah, it's Flippin Burgers. Not sure if they'll continue on as a pizza shop or what...so time to get our pizza fix in I guess.
Really thought the Greeks son would take over. He was in there alot pre-Covid and then haven't seen him nearly as often ever since, just Mama and Papa. They've earned the retirement!

Not sure. Wifey is feeding me the info since she helps/works/knows the staff at the Loop who told her. She said someone was supposed to be in last week to "get trained up" so I'm really hoping they keep it as a pizza shop with there recipes (esp. the sauce).
I may throw in an order to get the skinny tonight tho...

I see that Kinjos is opening at North Hill Mall from their website. I'm going to guess they'll take over the old Ricky's diner space?
Will be interesting to see how this does given that Ke Sushi / Tokyo Station is relatively close and they occupy the same space on the sushi price / quality spectrum.

New tenants lease Kensington's historic Plaza Theatre

Dobrowolski said the venue will remain a theatre but will also house an all-day cafe and patio outside, allowing movie-goers to grab a quick bite before the flick, while also allowing the food to be taken into the auditorium.
"We're going to have a food truck on the outside, and it's a permanent food truck … the idea is we'd showcase local chefs, who would take it over for three to four months," Dobrowolski said.
"So the experience coming in, say, January to March, would be different in April because there'd be a new chef with a new cuisine. And we felt that way we could really reflect the community of Calgary."

Walking on 10th street today I saw that Marathon has closed down. Didn’t go there much at all but always liked it.
Also lots of new retail popping up, a meatball joint by Higher Ground, a Japanese pancake place going in near Crave. Seems like activity on the upswing after a lot of closures.

Yup, I wonder if this one will have more luck since they are in a smaller space?

I've had Flirty Bird a couple times and enjoyed it. Work your way up the spicy levels though if your aren't a spice lord.

I saw a "For Sub Lease" sign in the Tim's on Kensington Road. Surprising, given Tim's seem bulletproof.
I always thought they would have been better off to rent the cursed location on the corner of Memorial and 10th to capture foot traffic walking into Downtown in the AM.

Nooooooo! That's my morning stop after dropping my kid off at daycare. Not sure why this area is such a dead zone for Tims. Other than the one on Kensington Road there is one in North Hill mall and then pretty much nothing else without going downtown.

As much as certain people would love the world to be free of cars - the business reality is that locations with drive thru's do signficantly more revenue than those without.
I notice they also closed the Tims in Canada Place downtown too.

I think most people in the neighbourhood end up at Deville or Good Trade on the more expensive side, or Higher Ground depending on their pricepoint preference.
Tim's has taken a STEEP dive in quality in the last five or so years too.

Interestingly a new Tim's drive-through opened near my house at the corner of northbound Crowchild Trail and 54th Ave SW about two months ago, and it's been nigh empty every time I've been past it. Doesn't bode well...

So I just had this, and I have a very high spice tolerance. So I went for the scorching right off the bat.
Holy ####, it is hot. Two bites and was already sweating. It's no joke. First time this has happened to me.
The chicken itself was alright. I'll try again in the future, but at a lower level so I can enjoy it a bit more rather than trying to survive be able to consume all of it.
