I propose having 3 goalies on the big team. Worked wonders last time, right?!

Makes one wonder if a few guys wont be back next yr:

Rittich - RFA
Smith - UFA
Gillies
Parsons
McDonald - RFA
Schneider
Zagidulin

I think it is safe to say Rittich, Parsons and Zagadulin will all be in the organization next season. Meanwhile McDonald is guaranteed to not re-sign given the amount of guys we already have to make spots for.

Schneider can be dumped in the ECHL but Gillies and Zagidulin can only play in the AHL or NHL and Parsons is a guy you want to keep developing preferably in the AHL.

How do we make room for all these guys if we go after a legitimate NHL goalie to tandem with Rittich?

Gillies played great in the final stretch of the season so its not as easy as dumping him.

How the goaltending and defense corps look next year is certainly intriguing given our depth at each position.

In terms of goalies, numerically we have depth. Talent wise, we are in the kiddie pool.

I foresee Rittich and a new body in the NHL
Gilles I see traded or loaned to another Team
McDonald is gone
Schnieder in the ECHL
And Parsons and the Russkie can play in the AHL

Why announce this on the eve of the playoffs?

Why not? Talent acquisition is a 365 day job.

They had to wait for for his KHL contract to officially expire.

I would rather Smith and Rittich not be worrying about 1 year deal goalie signings and how that may or may not effect their livelihood in weeks/months.

Happy to hear of talent acquisition, just questioning why they couldn't wait to announce it, that's all.

I doubt they're that particularly concerned.

A free bullet in the chamber? Sign me up, nice save % and GA, and still many years to develop as a goalie. I’m guessing with him being 6’2 that he’s got some decent athleticism, could be a nice find

Yes I meant depth in terms of numbers and agree there is a dearth of talent ready for NHL work.

I like Rittich, Zagidulin and Parsons as locks to return and your theory of loaning Gillies could make some sense - you made it sound so easy haha.

Let's hope this turns out better than the Andrei Medvedev experiment.

I imagine Smith may be considering retirement after the season anyway as he won't be back with the Flames and it's unlikely another team will sign him.

Matthew Phillips refers to him as "Z" in this clip.

New lid.

He's Anglicized the "Zaga" nickname on the chin to "Zagi."

IMO Zaga is cooler sounding than Zagi. Plus, it reminds of the English word saga.

I'm really not looking forward to having to regularly spell this guy's name, but if it comes with wins I'll get over it.
