for $10 more you can get the base kindle. not sure how that compares but maybe somebody on CP is a little more up-to-date on the ebook wars.

they sure have come down in price. $128 is pretty reasonable.

"While quantities last" almost makes it sound like they are coming out with a newer model?

Could be. Wonder what new features they'll add.

They should have a campaign that says something like "No one is buying our device, because frankly, it's not that great"

I haven't had much time to spend with either. I played around with the Kobo in the store one day and my Kindle just got shipped to me this afternoon. So I can't really comment that much on the hardware, but I would say that the Kobo feels cheaper. The reviews I have read put the new Kindle above the Kobo in specs.

One thing besides the hardware to consider is the store where you are getting your content from. I would trust Amazon to be around longer than Kobo. Also I have bought 3 ebooks (on the iPad) from both Kobo and Amazon. No problems with the Kindle ebooks, but two of the Kobo ebooks had problems. One ebook had lots of "I" were "/" and some words were pushed together. The other book was brutal. Easily a mistake on each page, sometimes multiple. The title of the book in the header was missing a letter. I don't know if it was Kobos fault or the publishers, but it was annoying. Although when I was looking for books Kobo usually had the cheaper price, but Amazons selection was bigger.

We're number two, but we try harder! (Avis) could become we're number two and frankly, there's not many reasons to choose Chapter's over Amazon.

or..

Afraid of the Interwebz?

It's just a series of tubes, but to be honest, we're scared too - Amazon is stealing all our profits. Come to Chapters and relax with the freedom of knowing you're paying more for less. -Chapters logo -

(I kid, I love Chapters and I love reading. ...Just wish they were more competitive.)

The only advantage the Kobo has over the Kindle is the epub support. For $10 more you get a more feature loaded and speedier machine in the Kindle. Page turns on the Kindle are faster, book loading is much faster. Contrast on the Kindle was recently improved by 30%, and it was already better than the Kobo before that. Unless you're a huge free book and library person, you should get the Kindle.

(I own a Kindle and have read a full book on the Kobo)
