38, and only because my wife absolutely insisted, or else I probably still wouldn't have one.

LOL, no -- when I was 12 I was given a brick called the "HTC Desire C" which had a ludicrously terrible processor. I seldom used it and I believe the plan was cancelled in very short order.

18 I think. It was a flip phone of some description. Most people had that bulletproof Nokia.

My parents made me get one when I was 16 (2006). They didn't appreciate me disappearing without knowing where I was or when I was coming back, lame.

Well if we were still using T9word in this day and age you'd probably be right.
But now in this time of economic uncertainty, wildly fluctuating oil prices and a complete breakdown of communications between men and women and an impending social crisis in light of the #metoo movement and that anything can be taken offense to and result in the ruination of careers and lives text messages have saved the day! We no longer need to actually speak to one another.
And thats a good thing.

I wonder what the average age is now. 12-13? Under 10?

That sounds about right. 10 seems young to me but I noticed some older kids at my daughters school with them and it goes up to Grade 4 so that would put them in the 9-10 year old age range.

Thats a tough call. I'd say 13 is when our youngest got a proper phone, but she got hand-me-downs prior to that, maybe at 10? But they werent on a network or anything so she couldnt call or text, but rather just play games.

Remember, as long as a cell phone has power, it can call 911 and doesn't need to be 'on a network' or even have a SIM card. It's extremely limited in that all it can do is call 911, and it can't be tracked, but it can still call.

51 years old and technically have never owned a cell phone but I have had a company issued one for work. I would say the first one I had was back in the late 90's and it was a Motoroal flip. First smart phone was in 2009.
We got our kids phones in grade 9 and they were the last two kids in their class to have one.

Samsung S500 flip phone when I was 22. The ringtone was the Hockey Night in Canada theme.

Got my first StarTac when I was 21ish in approx 1998.
What a game changer. First thing I did when I got loaded was start dialing all the numbers that had called me earlier in the evening, hoping to find someone to make party with at 2AM.
I don't recall if it had any kind of storage for names and numbers, or if I just didn't bother figuring it out.

Just to make everyone feel old, the HTC Desire C was released in 2012.

I started working at the Saddledome as an usher at 16 in 2002. My parents bought me a cell so I could call them if I ran into trouble getting home after an event.
It was this bad boy right here:

At 18 just after starting university. It was an old Motorola that was incredibly skilled at pocket dialling.

Nearly identical story. I too was 38 when I got my first cell phone. I refused to carry one but eventually my company insisted I carry one so clients can get a hold of me. Been carrying a company-issued smart phone ever since -- I've never owned a personal one. I'm worried if I ever get my own personal smart phone, I'll start sending d**k pics everywhere.

Got my own phone when I turned 18 back in '98. Sony Ericsson T28 or something like that. Didn't get a smartphone until 2008 when I started with a Blackberry Bold 9000. So nice typing with an actual keyboard. Can't believe I had only 500MB of data to use back then.
