Post How Old Were You When You Owned Your First Cell Phone

Currently, 25.5 million people in Canada use smartphones – 70% of the population. ( http://mediaincanada.com/2018/01/23/...-to-ios-study/). Mobile phones are undeniably a society shaping tool. The introduction of these devices changed the way people interact, learn, and entertain themselves. The day you started owning a cellphone can be understood as a moment that dramatically transformed your life.

I want to know, when did you get your first cellphone?

I bought an LG VX3100 when I was 18 or 19. I think it was right after high school.

I think I was 16? It was a pay as you go crappy thing, mostly to text girls and check in with my parents from time to time.

I didn't have a phone with an actual plan until I was 18.

When I was 17. A Nokia 3310.

Probably still has a charge left after all these years.

19 back in 2000. Think I got it after I got my first student credit card. It was a Nokia something. Forget the model.

My dad got a car phone installed in 1990 (I was 19).

An anecdote for parents out there: My wife and I didn't get cell phones until well into our 30s and felt that kids for sure didn't need them. Well, my 12 year old son, unbeknownst to us, made an appointment with his pediatrician and they had a long talk about cell phones and society. Sure enough the Dr. called us in for a meeting and proceeded to advocate for supplying a cell phone to the kid. He had 1 the next day.

No one knocks on doors (come out n play) anymore. No one under 20 is using a landline and talking to friends. Even at 9,10 years old, kids are working their social life through cell phones - mainly texting. This is more than a case of having what all the other kids want. It's more about being included in what other kids are doing. You're not meeting your friends at the park if you didn't get the text.

22. Got it with my first real IT job.

It was nice having a company paid phone for six years. Sucked when I had to pay for it myself afterward.

I was 27. My wife and I shared the cel phone for a couple of years until I got one from my place of employment.

I've gone through all types of phones. The worst phone I ever used was an iPhone... and I had to use a couple of BlackBerry phones!

I still don't have a sim card. I use a device for wifi, and can text from it using pinger, and use Fongo for emergency calling over wifi. But I don't bring it with me most of the time, unless I think I need it. Great for travel.

I really don't see the need to be contactactable at all times. I know I'm in the minority here.
