That horrible Panthers team was without Luongo since period 1 of the year, and the other guys (Reimer, Hutchinson) were pretty poor in relief. In that time they had just one loss that was by more than 1 goal and had several OT/SO losses. They often outshot their opponent but couldn't get a save.
They've just won 4 in a row since Luongo returned and played the fewest games in the league along with New Jersey who is also at the bottom of the league for the same reason: they've played 2 or 3 fewer games than the other teams.
The Panthers are 5 points out of a playoff spot with 3 games in hand. Win 2 of 3 and they're right back in the picture.
There are only two teams outside of the playoffs in the East with a positive goal differential. One is Pittsburgh, and the other is Florida.
They have the hottest line in hockey with Hoffman-Barkov-Dadonov. Hoffman has a 12 game point streak and Dadonov has 11 games in a row. Secondary forwards have been playing pretty well of late too. The team defense had some holes early, but have really solidified in recent days.
They had some bad luck early on, but I am very confident that the Panthers are a playoff team this year (so long as Luongo stays healthy, fingers crossed).
