Singer-songwriter with a feminist tint that was huge for a rather short time in late eighties. Think a better looking Alanis Morrissette with more talent, better voice and just more political substance overall.
Pretty much self-destroyed her career as a rising superstar, mostly by
ripping up a picture of the pope during her SNL visit, as a part of her personal campaign to draw attention to child abuse in the Catholic Church.
Did not go over well, especially in her home country of Ireland. This was way before the child abuse problem in the Catholic Church was a thing people could openly discuss.
Hard to say how much "crazy" was in her before that, but after that she certainly went through some rough patches, to put it kindly.
She was a problematic, opinionated character in a time when record companies had way more power and pop stars were mostly expected to be pretty and well behaved. Might be fair to say that something was just bound to happen.
Great singer and performer though. Her version of "
Nothing Compares 2 U" is still a showstopper. Her own song
Troy is still a personal favourite of mine.
Would certainly not mind a comeback.
