I think that is a slam dunk decision.

Of course the intention would be to not play him (for the 1st or 2nd round at least), but if you go deep in the playoffs - 5 rounds this year! - you'll need 9 or 10 Dmen. And having Valimaki as a #9 or 10 is a real advantage. He is simply too good to have the team slot in a guy like Yelemin if they find themselves deep into the conference finals and needing bodies.

Agreed. If the Flames are still playing in the third round,then I expect that no one will be especially worked up about expansion protection at that point.

I was impressed/surprised how many non-players I was able to fill in without looking at the team directory.
