The funny thing is, if the Devils would have beat Pittsburgh in their last game of the season they would have had a better win percentage than Montreal and would have been in the play-in (against Pittsburgh ironically). Or, maybe more likely, the NHL would have just made the play-in 20 teams then. So in a way, Pittsburgh screwed themselves by winning that last game (or they didn't, because the Devils were the 7th best team in the NHL since Christmas and if they did have to face them in a play-in who knows what might have happened).

Anyway if you think you're going to suck for a couple of years, having a cheap placeholder as head coach probably doesn't hurt all that much, provided he can develop players. I'm not sure there's any reason to think Hughes and company will stagnate just because they hired Ruff. So... whatever.
