Default 2019/2020 Trade Speculation and Rumors

Rumors and speculation from Friedman's latest 31 thoughts

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...easy-penguins/

Kessel vetoed the trade to the Wild and the details are out because both teams are unhappy.
Guesses the Coyotes will be high on Kessel's preferred destinations but the Coyotes don't have the scoring the Pens want in return

Zucker must be furious and motivated after being almost traded twice now

There was some in-season frustration that might have forced the Canes to trade Brett Pesce, but Wadell claims it is no longer a concern.

If Canes move a defenceman it will be Haydn Fleury who is now waiver eligible.

Little to no contract negotiations between the Sharks and Pavelski which is unusual for players the Sharks plan to bring back.

Erik Karlsson wants to see if Tampa Bay can fit him in.

Sens will look at bringing Spezza back

Colorado, Philly, and Chicago are doing a lot of due diligence on Kevin Hayes

Vegas will try to move David Clarkson's contract to alleviate their cap crunch. Also expected to move a d-man.

Flames, BJs, and Leafs were interested in KHL free agent 29 year old Sergei Andronov, but he told those teams that he is staying in Russia

Kessel sounding like he is going Shane Doan, weather over winning. I guess he has his SC so makes sense.

Hows that? He just nixed a trade to Minnesota. Arizona actually finished ahead of them.

I believe it was reported Kessel likes Arizona because of Rick Tocchet. He might also just want a better team to play for than Minnesota.

Its crazy to think anyone would want to go to Minnesota. The core is aging and looks like a team primed for a rebuild. Also one of the worst climates in the US markets.

Honestly Arizona should be appealing. They had a good 2nd half of the season and are a team on the rise.

And really if you have been to Scottsdale and Kierland . Its a great place

Whoop. Do you see Arizona being a contender anytime soon with their budget? He has 8 teams on his list and his prefered spot is not a bonafide contender but the Coyotes? Not hard to add that up.

They have been on the rise like the Oilers have been on the rise. They bleed money and have a low internal budget, they are never contending for a SC in the current market.

I actually dont think they are that far off and if we have learned anything about being contenders for the Stanley Cup from this year its just as simple as......get in and see what happens.

As for his list? Im sure there are multiple considerations beyond where a team is with their budget. In this case its his relationship with Rick Tocchet apparently, maybe his wife/girlfriend wants to live there...whatever.

Maybe none of your "contenders" want him or can afford him. So many things go into decisions, but nixing atrade to Minny in preference to go to Phoenix is entirely understandable.

More and more, teams are looking to fill secondary and depth spots with older Europeans and kids on Entry level contracts.

The middle class is being squeezed out by the escalation of top-end salaries.

I get that. I do think that this current version of the coyotes is the most talented one we have seen. Hopefully for their sake the upcoming move, and possible new owner can help them break out of purgatory.

As of this moment, only 4 teams have more salary committed to next year.

That will change obviously, but their spending is above league average im guessing when all is said and done.

I certainly envy their G situation compared to the Flames at this point....though i have no doubt BT addresses that.

Except the top end salaries aren’t actually escalating when you track it back to the beginning of the cap-era.

Jarome Iginla was paid $7M per on a $39M cap (2005/2006), 17.95% of the cap.

Sidney Crosby was paid $8.7M on a $56.7M cap (2008/2009), 15.35% of the cap.

Connor McDavid was our $12.5M on a $79.5M cap (2018/2019), 15.72% of the cap.

“Overpay” for top end talent all day. What you can’t bloody afford to do is overpay for mid to low-tier talent.

What is shifting is that players are being paid properly when they’re younger, and those who invest in older “post-apex” players are getting burned.

IMO, the more european free agents you can attract, the less spending picks at key moments hurts you.

Look at Marcus Sorensen of the sharks. Comes over from Sweden at 24 years old, signs a 2 way deal, adjusts to north american pro hockey and has now made the lineup as a 27 year old prime aged bottom 6 forward.

That's like having success on an extra 3rd or 4th round pick 6 years ago.

He's a relatively unremarkable player, but he didn't cost anything to grab, which means the cost the sharks have paid for other players doesn't hurt as bad.

The Flames are or should be desperately looking to fill out the roster this way to avoid having to move more assets for warm bodies to plug into the lineup (Shore, Lazar, Chris Stewart).

Man if we could dump James Neal then I would love to have Phil Kessel on this team.

If only though..

Being a relatively low-budget team, the Coyotes have the luxury of cap space but also have a disproportionate number of players signed to entry-level deals, which saves the team money for the time being. However, those deals will eventually expire and those players will end up getting paid one way or another.
A team that bleeds millions of dollars is not going to spend huge dollars to put a contender on the ice. As their young players start coming off entry level deals they will be jettisoned out of town for picks and prospects. That is assuming they are not in Houston in the near future.

Willikers. If Karlsson has any reason to think that he could be Tampa bound, then there is a big ticket that is going to have to move out. Tampa also has to pay Point. He is not getting a bridge contract.
