CALGARY, AB – The Calgary Flames and Sport Chek Development Camp is set to take place this Saturday, August 23rd and Sunday, August 24th at the SAIT Campus. The hockey camp created by Rob Kerr for youth will be hosted through the Flames Foundation’s EvenStrength Program and HEROS (Hockey Education Reaching Out Society).

"As a young hockey player, the biggest hurdle during the off-season is being able to get into the rink and log on-ice training time before evaluation camps start in early September”, said Frederick Lecoq, Vice President, Marketing, FGL Sports Ltd. “We decided to partner with Rob Kerr’s program and the Calgary Flames in an effort to open up more ice time and help inspire these young players to get back on the ice – hitting the 2014 hockey season in full stride.”

The two-day camp will include on-ice coaching, classroom instruction, hockey presentations, sport activities and a big league experience game for youth participants. Sven Baertschi from the Calgary Flames will attend the camp on Sunday for a ceremonial puck-drop and to sign autographs for the young players. Flames alumnus members Rene Corbet and Jeff Shantz will act as honourary coaches for the big league game.

“It’s exciting that in the third year of the camp we are able to bring so many individuals and groups together, like Sport Chek and the Calgary Flames, to help give Calgary and area kids a once in a lifetime opportunity to participate in camp like this,” said Rob Kerr. “While this hockey camp has been built on a great foundation by volunteers from the Calgary sports media and hockey communities, adding The Flames and Sport Chek this year will only enhance the experience for the kids.”

Players will receive instruction and activities based on the principles of teamwork, leadership and respect in sport. Representatives from the Flames Foundation for Life, Sport Chek, local media outlets and the SAIT Trojans hockey team will volunteer as instructors and assist on both days. Media availability will take place on Sunday, August 25th at 1:00 pm.
