Cap Dollars =/= Real Dollars

Arizona's projected cap hit, per CapFriendly, is $81.3M, but their estimated salary expenditure is only $69M.

Compared to the Flames, where projected cap hit right now is $73.7M, and estimated salary expenditure is $75.7. This with Tkachuk not signed.

I don't believe Clayton Keller is a centre.
· NHL.com has him listed as a RW
· CapFriendly has him lining up as a LW
·#Daily Face-off has him at LW
· Dobber's Hockey has him at LW
· HockeyDB has him listed as a centre, but I am quite certain they retain everyone's position as drafted.

I think Tkachuk is a better player than Keller, but maybe the gap between them is actually pretty slim.
Yeah, but it's a huge stretch to say that Keller is guaranteed to have Tkachuk's third year.

Keep in mind that Keller was the top scorer on a low-scoring team last year, while Tkachuk benefited greatly from playing with much better support, particularly on the PP.

I never suggested that he would; nor do I think he is on the same level as Tkachuk. My only argument here is that the gap between them is not vast. In other words, a $7.15 m cap hit on an 8-year deal actually has more potential to keep Tkachuk's contract number lower than it does to inflate it—if that makes any sense.

Keller displayed terrific chemistry with one player last year: Nick Schmaltz. The 15-ish games they played together were electric.

With Schmaltz healthy, Kessel added to those two guys on the right side, and Keller's natural progression, I think this contract will look excellent very soon.

But Tkachuk shouldn't be considered that much of a comparable. Keller does not drive play even close to the rate that Tkachuk does.

Keller (RW) had success with Schmaltz(C) and Dvorak(LW) until Shmaltz was injured.

It is expected the line will start the 19/20 season together.

Dvorak has never played a game with Schmaltz. Dvorak was injured when Schmaltz was acquired and didn't make his season debut until February. I'd honestly be surprised if Dvorak started the season as anything more than the 3C or even 4C, he has a lot to prove and that contract is looking questionable at best.

The line combo at the time was Keller - Schmaltz - Galchenyuk.

You’re right. However, Keller had a lot of success at RW with Schmaltz, when Schmaltz was healthy. Keller had 14 points in 17 games when they were together.

I think that was Scorp's original point.

I don't know how this changes things much. If anything it brings it down from the Matthews and Aho comparable that we're left at using as default.

Keller has already lead the Coyotes in scoring for two years straight. In particular the 2017-2018 season when he put up 65 points on a team that scored 206 goals is a pretty significant ratio for a rookie. He has little offensive support around him but still produces. A bit of a sophomore slump is expected when the other team's game plan is "Stop Keller, watch out for OEL and we win."

Their advanced stats together were nothing to write home about. They gave up a ton of goals before Schmaltz got injured.

Keller was -8 playing with Schmaltz during those 17 games, and -13 in the 65 other games.
