Is it really though? If the Flames had arguably the worst 15 year stretch in the history of the NHL like the Oilers just did I'm not sure if there would be any fans left and rightly so. Oilers fans seem to be pretty oblivious to how bad their organization is as they continue to sell out games and purchase merchandise. They have collective low self esteem and simply can't break free of what's been an abusive relationship. Staples is simply doing the bidding of the organization that has been manipulating their abused fanbase for years now. I don't think the fans know any better and have been programmed that losing is simply part of the process enroute to the holy grail

I think the average or semi dialed in fan gets sold a boosted bill of goods and then ends up disappointed with media like that.

Valimaki is lighting up the same league as a defenseman and a year younger and the only media mention of him is a question to Treliving that is answered conservatively.

They may get disappointed but it's quickly displaced by the next overhyped flavor of the week prospect or Draisaitl/McDavid fluff article. The propaganda machine always ensures that there's a rosy article in the pipeline. I just don't think you can compare that fanbase and organization with the Flames or any other as there's just a different dynamic.

I mean we all tend to look at our team and prospects through rose colored glasses, but Oiler fans and media have coke bottle sized pairs like that little old guy in the Simpsons. It's always nauseating during the offseason and the start of the season, but once the wheels inevitably fall off it's great fun to toss it all back at them.

Let's get one thing straight though. What Valimaki, Kinvall and Chechelev are doing overseas is far and away more impressive than what their guys are doing, even though they aren't getting near the same level of recognition.

These guys are earning even bit of hype they get, whereas the other crop are getting the standard Oiler treatment. Glorified for strong but not spectacular play.
