Treliving was pretty stuck. He didn't have many options to sell - Brodie would have been a great trade piece if Hamonic and Gio were healthy. He also didn't have many assets to use to buy. I'm glad they didn't overpay for a rental (ie Tyson Barrie) and that they didn't send the message that they are giving up on making the playoffs this year by selling.
Sadly, the teams around us appear to have gotten better while we mostly tinkered around the edges.

I don't think anyone was advocating that trading Monahan or Guadreau today was the right course of action, but if he's not going to get them some added help now, or at least at some point in the last 12 months, what exactly is Tre expecting from them and the rest of the team?

'remaining schedule' is an absolutely pointless argument.
Fans constantly look at the upcoming schedule for teams and think "super easy - they should win them all!" or "super tough, they're going to lose them all!"
But in the end, teams beat good teams and lose to bad teams, and the schedule usually has little to no appreciable impact on that fact.

Because we’re in the middle of a playoff race.
That anybody thought we would be sellers is completely baffling to me.

Owners stand to make some nice playoff money if this team gets in. I'm sure that makes it worth it to watch Hamonic and Brodie mosey on somewhere else this summer.
Gotta make the post season though.

I dunno. To play better?
Who exactly was out there? It doesn't look like the Leafs were moving Kapanen out. And a high priced rental for a team that doesn't look to be making a deep run this year doesn't seem smart.
Besides' who wants those guys enough to pay what they will be worth offseason (and can afford to pay the acquisition cost and their salaries).

I’m thinking EG s not being appropriated, 27 year old defenceman who has multiple offensive tools. Awesome trade for a third round pick. Also love any player who has played on the Blackhawks

Again, if Gustafsson can help the powerplay it could be a meaningful move to help the team get in the playoffs.
And if they re-sign one or both of these guys, it'll be a strong move.
Lots of "ifs" there to be sure, but the Gustafsson deal in particular is done to address a pretty clear and compelling need.

I am glad the Flames not making any big moves this deadline. It’s obvious this is not our year, much easier to make trades in the off season.

Which is why you make some of the many moves that have been rumored to be out there at the draft, in the off season or anytime between Oct.1 and now.
We all knew this team had some major flaws at this point last year and nobody can really argue that anything was done to remotely address them aside from hoping for internal improvement in the full year that has passed since.
Sitting out the deadline for the most part is fine, but I'm losing faith in the GM when he consistently can't seem to close trades and hasn't improved the team one iota in a calendar year.

So then wouldn't the mandate have been to add a quality piece forward, even if that meant mortgaging the future? I mean, they are not "in" by any stretch here. If getting in the playoffs was the only concern, they would have done something more today.

I am happy that the Flames didn't force a bad deal.
I am sad that the only moves they made will push Kylington down the depth chart when I would like to see him continue his development.
I am happy that Gustafsson will probably help our power play.
I am sad that the help on the power play will not be enough to drastically change much this season, I think we probably miss the playoffs, and will end the season in a pretty meh place. All in for Hall next season?

I can make that argument:
Frobert provides a much needed upgrade to the bottom pairing, and Gustafsson significantly improves a struggling powerplay, and a blue line that has not been contributing nearly enough offence.
It's not sexy, but it makes sense.
