Default Toronto Maple Leafs to host Centennial Classic against Detroit in 2017

@Mirtle:

I don't know who Leafs will face but getting an outdoor game in Toronto next season is a done deal. About time.

Sounds like it will be against the red wings, I'll change the heading when its confirmed.

Strange; much talk here in St Louis that the Blues would get the next game

They should host Tampa; great storyline having Stamkos play his former team.

Probably Canucks. Celebrate two teams who won't be winning anything anytime soon.

It also sounds like Winnipeg will be hosting Edmonton at an outdoor game in November.

Last week, Friedman (I think) said that they might do the Heritage Classic in Toronto on New Year's Day with the Winter Classic in the States on January 2 (because the 1st is the final Sunday of the NFL season). The Winnipeg game would then be a Stadium Series game.

BMO field is super ugly, imo. At the very least, it's quite 'meh'. Not a great place for a Winter Classic at all.

Isn't Toronto/Leafs hosting the World Juniors at the same time? Doesn't make sense to have this overlap with what will likely be the medal round of the WJC

Montreal is hosting the medal round, Toronto only gets the prelims.

Skydome can't be opened in the winter. Unlike some of the newer retractable roof stadiums, which are designed as open-air stadiums that can be covered when the weather is bad, Skydome is an indoor stadium that can be opened when weather conditions are perfect.

We saw what you get when you play an "outdoor" game under a roof in Vancouver. I doubt the league wants to repeat that.

It won't be the medal round. January 1 is usually an off day for the World Juniors because the round-robin ends on New Year's Eve and the medal round starts on January 2. The New Year's Eve game will likely be Canada-US (maybe Russia) at the ACC.

If they can work things out, I wouldn't be surprised to see them try to have the Canada-US game on NYE at BMO. Buffalo is hosting the World Juniors in 2017-18 and they've already announced that the US's NYE game will be outdoors for that one.

There is also the Battle of Pennsylvania, Flyers at Penguins, from Heinz Field which would be another Stadium Series game.

Good for them .... if or until Calgary hosts or plays in another NHL outdoor game the Winter/Heritage/Stadium Series has become non event in my book ....
