If you are starting out now I would maybe suggest you try to learn right-handed as being limited in what you can buy in the future might be a bit disappointing. 99% of videos and tutorials are also based on right-handed players so it will make learning easier without having to translate what you are seeing in your video in your brain. This is the perfect time to start and being a lefty might help you as you will have more strength and coordination on your fretting hand.

I think one of the uphill struggles of most people learning right-handed guitar starting out is a lack of left-handed dexterity so you already have a leg up!

And yes, hearing the chords and sounds is everything to know if you are playing cleanly and accurately. Even slightly touching a chord wrong will cause other notes or buzzing.
