Default Shanahan re-ups for 6 years

Good team but way to forward heavy and they have a LOT of work to do within the salary cap obviously.

He really has been very good for them though....and I loathe the Leafs.

6 years seems like quite a long extension for this type of role.

Did he directly hire Dubas?
The Matthews and Nylander contracts are pretty bad.
Is he the one who gave Babcock 8yr/50M?

If so he shouldn't be rewarded with an long extension IMO.

Matthews/Nylander/Babcock are on Dubas...but yes Shanny brought him on board for sure.

As for the $$ for Babcock, that, (in Toronto) is really irrelevant.

I think the Leafs have more stability than that franchise has had...probably since Punch Imlach. That's worth something.

Financially, as always, the team is printing money. So really, he has dome a lot of good things unfortunately, but as a business they have to be happy with him. That's reflected in the length of the deal I would suspect, and i am sure a hefty raise on the 2.5M rumored salary he received to go there to begin with...after spurning the Flames 6 years ago to stay on with the leagues offices.

Six years is long but I believe ownership had to do this. Clearly they believe in the guy, right or wrong, and they were probably concerned another team would put the big out that they’d like to poach him after his contract expires. Does he deserve it? Hard to argue that the leafs didn’t do a lot of smart things in a short period of time to do a quick turnaround. He surrounded himself with a good team so I’m just as inclined to think it was a group effort. It’ll be interesting going forward as two major pieces left (Hunter and Lamorillo) and with the cap tightness I’m keen on seeing what they can do. They have solid tradable pieces so I have little doubt they will be fine. Avoiding getting their players poached will be the one I’m most curious about as I don’t believe Dubas has the respect of his peers in the older old boys club.

6 years is irrelevant, we're basically talking about a severance package and security for Shanny.

We will see what Dubas is made of this summer as he’s got a lot on his plate with the Marner contract and having to add several defensemen without a lot of cap space.

Hilarious sportsnet poll.

The question is what the Leafs biggest obstacle is

66 percent say the cap, 34 percent say playoff format

They do know that if they can’t beat Boston in round 1, they won’t beat them in rounds 2 or 3, no?

Good luck pleasing your fans, Shanahan

i'd assume that shanny had some to lots of input into all of the decisions below.

nylander deal does not look good right now, but the real proof wuill be next season when he has a full camp under his belt.

what do you think the right deal was for matthews? as a reminder he signed a 5 yr - $58.1m deal that starts this fall. he has played 212g and has 205p (.97 ppg)

macdavid has 287g and 382p (1.33 ppg) and sid is 943g & 1216p (1.29 ppg)

The one good thing about the Nylander contract that gets overlooked is that it’s very tradeable as he gets paid a lot up front and after July 1st bonus is paid the actual cash owed to him works out to $4.9 million/season for the rest of the deal.

So tradable. The perfect candidate on the team. All Duba’s has to do is not publically say he won’t trade him.....

What a dummy.

Eh, who cares. GMs lie all the time. It's more an issue of selling low on him. I assume they will keep him.

Nylander contract was pretty much top dollar IMO, if they were going to give him a top dollar contract they should have been able to avoid a holdout. This is similar to the Drai contract, it may look okay in the future but it was an overpayment at the time of signing.

The problem with Matthews contract is that it was all RFA years, for 11.6M/per they should have been getting 3 UFA years also.
