People just looking for something to complain about. Ryan's production isn't there yet but he's still been quite good and isn't being overused at all.

Currently, Ryan ranks (among Flames forwards):

5th in CF% (55.90%)
5th in FF% (56.96%)
6th in SF% (53.94%)
6th in SCF% (53.96%)
2nd in HDCF% (53.45%)

3rd last in oiSH% (5.62%)

He's not particularly strong in any of these categories in terms of per 60 rates but he doesn't give up anything either.

This is a player who's playing solid 5v5 hockey but just isn't getting the bounces.

There's some problems with this team but Ryan hasn't been one and it's just people with clear biases against the player that are complaining with zero evidence to back them up.

How many people have a bias against Derek Ryan? Based on what?

One goal and two assists in 18 games isn't zero evidence. Peters even scratched him for a game.

Some of the criticism has been over the top but I don't think you can totally ignore his production either. Does it always have to be one extreme or the other?

Value for this guy in certain areas only. But I agree, he is not good from what I have seen. He will not be a threat to score ever

Nothing but a 31 year old career minor leaguer/Canadian University player who got a couple lucky breaks and managed to get a seriously overpaid NHL contract. In the old NHL before all the southern US expansion Ryan never sniffs an NHL job

The problem I have with Ryan is we are going to need cap space this offseason.

The players, when taking their contracts into consideration, I think make the most sense to move are Ryan, Stone and Frolik.

We just signed Ryan and he's already on that list.

Ryan is a 4th line below average player nothing more Peter's!
Maybe you should see what you can do to slander Treliving again, or even shake Tree’s hand again while putting some STANK on your pupil while you make eye contact with him... if only to see if that satiates your delusional tendencies.

In a physical game Ryan's effectiveness is really limited.

He's been utterly useless in tonight's game vs the Oilers.

Backlund has not scored against Edmonton yet.

Fingers crossed

If by him, you mean Bennett, I fully agree.

You still want Bennett traded? Seriously?

But back on topic ...

After another high possession night Derek Ryan is now 2nd in all three defensive categories per 60 minutes for the team.

Just back of Frolik for shot attempts
Just back of Hamonic for scoring chances against
Just back of Hamonic for high danger chances against

Don't think he's going to score his way into good contract status, but at least nothing bad happens when he's on the ice

Not a fan of Ryan on the powerplay, but it certainly worked last night.

I should have used green text.

I don't know why either player would be traded.

The Flames need exactly what Ryan is bringing. A decent RH centerman.

Ryan might be a little overpaid, but not that much. He's a super useful bottom six guy. Doesn't hurt you defensively, can move up the lineup if injuries happen, can play PK and PP, and is pretty consistent. Plus he's excellent at faceoffs.

Each of those qualities costs money. There will be plenty of nights when we'll be really glad to have him, and it's easy to see how a guy like that becomes a coaches pet.

Even if you don't like fancy stats, you can't argue against how well the third line played against the Oilers. Literally skating circles around them in the third with a one goal lead...

I keep reading this thread title as “Derek Ryan’s overdose” and I get worried for a second.
