Going to Montreal...what should I do?

Travelling to Montreal next month for a conference (wife going too).

Revamping this thread for updated tips on things to do & see, places to eat, etc.

Have to get a smoked meat sandwich and some real poutin.
Don't care what anyone else say's, when I was a kid we loved Champlain beer. Didn't grow up there, but went a few times.
Most of the other places I went, I would never dream of bringing my wife.

For poutine you have to go to La Banquise. Hands down the best around and a local favorite!

Schwartz's deli has the best smoked meat sandwiches, they've been around since 1928. Walk around Old Port (Old Montreal), lots of cool shops and the Notre Dame Basilica is pretty amazing inside.

Montreal Canadiens Hall of Fame at the Bell Centre. Some cool old jerseys and other memorabilia -- well worth the cost of admission if you're into that sort of thing.

Montreal is a great place to visit as the food and women are fantastic. If you are single you won't be disapointed.

If you like cookies. check out a cookie store called Monsieur Felix & Mr.Norton, best cookies ever (a bit expensive though). The stores are usually within large malls, including some in downtown.

Heading to Montreal tomorrow for a few days.
Staying in Harlem (near Old Montreal, China Town) on Friday/Saturday.. here are a few things that peaked my interest:

Thinking of going towards Quartier Dix 30 for the wife and wanted to make the most of having wheels.

Dix30 is five minutes from where I live.
Great shopping and good dining.
Habs practice facility there too.
Great dining farther down south shore toward Longueuil. Can roll down the 132 and get good views of Big O and Isle Notre-Dame as you head down that way too.
Otherwise not much on South shore, unless you roll out toward the ski areas.

Had the best dinner ever this new years at Les Infidels. I have no idea where it is or if I'm allowed back. You have to bring your own wine. The butter comes with a side of salt. Savages.

No.
Some are mostly catered strictly to dining - and if that it strictly what you are after, probably best to stick to the city and gorge yourself.
Here is a couple recommended places outside the city (south shore), where you can get perhaps the best of both worlds (traditional experience and dining).

Both places are within 30 minutes of DIX30 and might make for a real nice time on car day.

Other random thought(s) (without car):

Metro will get you virtually anywhere on the island (except to and from airport). Daily passes are $10 unlimited, including express bus from airport, and any other buses for that matter. If you land during rush hour, consider the bus if you are frugal (cheap like me!). Have known people to have $100+ airport cabs to Old Montreal during rush hour ($40 no traffic). To my knowledge they will not flat rate it. But then you would have to take Metro if staying in old Montreal, as express bus only takes you downtown, so might not be best idea on your first day!

If you do decide to stop by the old Forum (now shopping/theatre) and I'm not saying it's worth a visit, though I enjoyed it, you are getting out at Atwater metro station. Please decide to eat lunch at Sparta Rotisserie. It's a block west on Ste Catherine. It is the definition of the diviest of dive diners, but just may be the best souvlaki you have ever had, unless your giagia in Greece makes it. (BTW - Don't expect Atwater station is real close to Atwater market, if you thought you might stop by there- it's a couple km away).

Thought it was worth a bump, not a new thread.

Eldrick you seem to be quite helpful, maybe you can give me a few pointers. I'm coming back for F1 in June. 6 days. Wednesday to Monday. Traveling alone again.

Just booked 5 nights thru air bnb to stay in the area of Verdun, right off the green line, near station de l'eglise. Is this a decent enough neighborhood? Streetview makes it seem ok and it was cheap enough that I don't care if it isn't right in the heart of downtown. Last year I stayed in Laval so it can't be any further.

Last year I walked all through Old Montreal on Thursday and on Friday/Sat after practice/qualifying I went to the street stuff on Peel/Crescent/St Catherines and also watched the Champions League final in little italy during a street festival.

Any suggestions? Food? Entertainment? Cancel my airbnb because i'm sure to get stabbed walking home at night?

I'd like to maybe hit up a museum or something else kinda touristy. Weather permitting of course. If it is super nice out again I may not want to be indoors.

I'm not much of a partier and while I like food I'm more into the hole in the wall cheap stuff than I am fine dining.

I'll definitely be taking bus from airport then metro to the apartment I'm staying at. Any suggestions let me know. I travel light so it should be ok on the train with a small carry on type luggage I would think.
