Flames' Mikael Backlund back at practice after concussion
Quote:
“If I would’ve stayed and we were in the final, I probably could have played,” Backlund said. “But looking at the big picture, to be thrown in for a final game — Game 2 or Game 3 — wouldn’t have been ideal, even though it would have been a great experience. So it was a good decision to go back here.
“But right away, I didn’t feel that bad that I was worried.”
|
Quote:
“It was fun to be back out there with the boys, and everything felt good,” said Backlund, who will be a spectator for Friday’s exhibition meeting with the Vancouver Canucks at the Saddledome. “We’ll just take it day-by-day and see how I react to every step I take.
“I’m not stressed at all,” he added. “I feel confident that I’ll be back in time and feeling good when I do get back playing. Getting those few games before this camp, it was a good start. Every shift mattered. There was a lot at stake every game.
“So it was a fun way to start a season.”

Parsons Ready For Second Shot At First Game
Quote:
"Coming in I didn't really know anything," Parsons said. "I talked to a few guys that had been at camp before and they said to just work hard and battle. You can only do what you can do. Go make an impression. I came in and it's awesome here. I love it. I've been battling and competing.
"The biggest thing is competing. I feel I definitely made an impression. I'm still here today. It's been great. It's been an awesome experience.
"It just comes down to me competing and making a good first impression. These guys watched me during the season. They ended up drafting me. Coming into pro camp this is the longest spurt of time they've been able to watch me play. I think it's just working hard and competing.
"I'm trying to stay here as long as possible."

Jankowski Set For Scotiabank Saddledome Debut
Quote:
"Ever since I was drafted, I wanted to play here at the 'Dome," he said after this morning's practice. "I've heard great things about the fans and everything so I'm really excited to get in tonight and hopefully perform and help the team get a win."
|
Quote:
"In the (offensive zone) - trying to get more offensive zone time," he stated. "Being harder on those pucks. When the puck gets dumped in, be the first guy in on the forecheck and win those puck battles and get the puck back for our team. I think that's huge for us.
"I know in our first game in Edmonton, we didn't really have too much zone time so I think that's a big part of that. You've got to get in there and win those 50/50 battles.
"I just have to keep working my hardest and hopefully earn another (game)."

Shinkaruk on war path
Quote:
The 21-year-old, who has added about 10 pounds of muscle and now weighs 192 pounds, is expected to skate against the Canucks tonight with Flames linemates Matt Stajan and Alex Chiasson.
Shinkaruk is just as motivated to beat the Canucks, and try to prove them wrong, as he was last season.
“It will burn probably until I’m done playing hockey,” he said Friday morning.

Chris Higgins fighting for roster slot as Flames tackle his former team
Quote:
The Canucks literally paid Higgins to go away this summer — ending their relationship with a contract buyout — but the veteran left-winger isn’t putting too much stock into who’s skating on the opposite side Friday.
He’s already put the 2015-16 campaign in his rearview mirror, anxious to forget about a miserable season that started with a fractured foot and also included a demotion to AHL Utica.
And he doesn’t have a ton of time to prove his worth to the Flames. After Friday’s clash with the Canucks, there are only three dates remaining on Calgary’s exhibition itinerary.
“I have to perform, but I feel like I could play a role here and help this team be very successful,” Higgins said. “Like I’ve said before, and I’ve answered this question a few times, training camp is tryouts. I’ve approached it, with or without a contract, the same way every year.”

Shinakaruk at 192 lbs now? Wow, I thought it would be around the 180-185 mark.

I wish sports reporters would stop saying "put on 10 lbs of muscle" when they mean "put on a clean 10 lbs". To put on 10 lbs of muscle, one has to gain about 20-25 pounds overall. I'm tired of all these monocle-popping statements.
