I've been doing a little background reading about their history/origin today while I browse through those links, and it seems that is a common theme in many cases- the artist has not seen the film, but is told something about it, and perhaps given some still images from the film, and told to draw something up. The results are all over the map, from hilariously literal, to evocative, to confusing, to subime, to pitch perfect.
I somehow skipped over that ROTJ poster while browsing- wow, what a terrific poster!
